Gerald E. Shope, 90, of Avis, passed away Friday, Jan. 11, 2013, at the Gatehouse.
He was born March 29, 1922, in Avis, the son of Clay A. and Marcella M. (Boyer) Shope.
Gerald was married to the late Kathryn E. Frank Shope who passed in 1999.
He was a World War II U.S. Army veteran.
Gerald was a life member of the Avis United Methodist Church.
He retired in 1985 from the Hammermill Paper Company after 28 years of service.
Gerald loved Penn State football, hunting, fishing and traveling throughout the U.S. and overseas.
Survived by his first wife Rosemary (Harney) Smock of Ocala, Fla.; a son, Bryson C. (Mary Pat) Shope of Egg Harbor Township, N.J.; four daughters, Carol M. Jeter of Hammonton, N.J., Laura J. Cunningham, of Absecon, N.J., Debra F. Bernosky of Huntingdon Valley, Pa., Janet V. (Kim) Callahan of South Avis; a stepson, Thomas G. Welshans, of Carlisle; a stepdaughter, Beverly J. Karstetter of Loganton; 14 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; five stepgrandchildren; seven stepgreat-grandchildren; and a sister, Encie Swinehart, of Jersey Shore.
He is also survived by a dear friend, Lois Lovelace of Lock Haven.
Predeceased by a daughter Linda S. Shope; two brothers, Bryson and Melvin.

Relatives and friends are invited to Gerald's Life Celebration service 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 14, 2013, at the Rearick-Carpenter Funeral Home, Ltd. "A Life Celebration Home" 1002 Allegheny St., Jersey Shore, with Rev. Thomas C. Jones officiating. A visitation will be held Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be in Jersey Shore Cemetery.
