Althea G. Cooper, 91, formerly of 152 Mount Pleasant Ave., Jersey Shore, died Wednesday evening, Jan. 23, 2013, in the Sycamore Manor Health Center.
Althea was born Aug. 20, 1921, in Jersey Shore, the daughter of Edward J. Cable and the former Martha Hughes.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold S. Cooper, on April 1, 1994. They were united in marriage on July 4, 1970, in the Jersey Shore Presbyterian Church.
Althea was a 1939 graduate of Jersey Shore High School. She also graduated from Maryville College and the Pennsylvania State University. For many years she taught French and English in many Pennsylvania and New York school districts. She was a lifelong faithful member of the Jersey Shore Presbyterian Church serving in many volunteer positions including Sunday School Superintendent. Althea was a past board member of DAR and past board member of the Jersey Shore Public Library. She was a faithful blood donor and enjoyed the arts, traveling, reading and caring for her pets.
She is survived by several nieces and a nephew, many great nieces and nephews and her close friend and caregiver, Laura Winkelman. She was also preceded in death by a brother, Dwight Cable and two sisters, Velma C. Gleason and Marthanne C. Young.
Funeral services will be Saturday, Jan. 26, 2013, at 3 p.m. in the Jersey Shore Presbyterian Church, 235 S. Main St., Jersey Shore. Burial will be in the Jersey Shore Cemetery. No public visitation. Rev. Charles D. Winkelman, her pastor, will officiate.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made in her name to the Jersey Shore Presbyterian Church or to the Jersey Shore Public Library, 110 Oliver St., Jersey Shore, PA 17740.
