Your article about the Pennsylvania State Senate looking at the status of tax exempt organizations would have been better if the Sun-Gazette would have listed all of the local institutions that do not pay taxes.
The system is out of control! The State Constitution says that the Legislature may make certain organizations Tax Exempt, it does not mandate that they be tax exempt.
Hospitals that pay their staff hundreds of thousands of dollars per year have no need of tax exemption. Same with educational organizations. If Penn State can pay athletic directors several million dollars a year then they can afford to pay taxes.
And churches? Even Mexico makes churches pay taxes. There must be 100 tax-exempt churches in Williamsport; why not one? When I was in the Army, there was one religious building for each Brigade at Fort Hood, Texas. That building was used by ALL religions as most worship on a different Sabbath day. Let them all use the School buildings for their services on weekends if they want a tax exempt building.
It's time for everyone to pay taxes, not just private citizens and industry.
