Shirley Jean Stine Ranck Zimmer, 86, of 215 E. Central Ave., passed away on Monday, April 15, 2013, at her home in South Williamsport after an almost six year battle with lung cancer.
Shirley was born Jan. 30, 1927, at Williamsport, she was the daughter of Oliver (Jerry) Stine and Margaret (Duchman) Stine.
She graduated from Williamsport High School in 1944. Shirley was a member and former Deacon, Sunday School teacher and Bell Choir member of Covenant Central Presbyterian Church. Leading a very active life, Shirley had been a member and officer of many organizations in her lifetime: Mountain Avenue School PTO, treasurer; SW Band Parents, secretary; Little Mountaineer League, treasurer; Auditor for the Borough of SW; past-president of the Zafar Grottoettes; Women of the Moose; Bald Eagle Ski Club, treasurer; member of various bowling leagues and square dance clubs, including the Susque Hannas and Hanks and Billtown Squares. Shirley had, for many years, been scorekeeper and statistician for baseball teams in which her sons participated right up until last summer when she was still keeping score for the Emmanuel Baptist softball team for which her three grandsons played and her son Eric is player/coach. Shirley started downhill skiing at age 55 and continued to ski into her 84th year, enjoying several ski trips out west and to New England. She was a season pass holder at Ski Sawmill for 28 years, many of which she won, along with skis and other equipment, by the large amount of donations she collected each year for "Ski for Heart". She received an award and a letter from the President of the U.S. for having voted in every election for 50 years. She volunteered with Meals on Wheels for 43 years since the program began in the area in 1970 up until just months before she passed on. She was a volunteer for the American Red Cross Bloodmobile and was herself a seven gallon donor.
She began her 68-year career in tax preparation and bookkeeping as an employee of Harold L. Boice in 1944. After 12 years learning the business from Mr. Boice, she started her own business in 1956, retiring in 2012. It was fitting that she finished her work on earth on April 15th.
Shirley was predeceased by her first husband, Glen A. Ranck, who she married on June 7, 1947. They were married for 42 years until his death on July 4, 1989. Together they had three children, Michelle A. Koons, Williamsport, Glen Scott (Gayle), Valrico, Fla., and Eric D. (Barbara), South Williamsport, all of whom survive. There are seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. She was also predeceased by her second husband, John "Buzz" Zimmer, with whom she shared 11 years of marriage. Shirley is survived by one stepdaughter, Dolly Zimmer, Andover, Mass., and two stepgrandsons. In addition, Shirley is survived by one brother, Robert A. Stine (Lee), Camp Hill, Pa., having been predeceased by the rest of her siblings: brothers, Paul, Phillip, Kenneth, Jack and William Stine and sister, Margaret "Peg" Scudder.
