Kristina Natasha Carey, Airianna Sykes and Tirae S. Nichols were planning to hold a party at a home in the 600 block of Third Avenue on the night of July 6, according to state police.
The three wanted to get alcoholic beverages for the party, but they needed a friend 21 or older to purchase the booze since Carey and Sykes are teenagers and Nichols is 20, police said.
Shonta Herlena Payton, 22, of 823 W. Third St., was recruited to get the alcoholic beverages for the threesome, police said in court papers.
Shorlty before 9 p.m. on the night of the scheduled party, officers of the state's Bureau of Liquor Control and Enforcement watched Payton get out of a pickup truck and walk into the the Wines and Spirits Store on Hepburn Street in the city to purchase a bottle a vodka while Carey, Sykes and Nichols waited in the vehicle.
After buying the vodka, Payton got back in the truck, which then headed to a business in the 700 block of West Fourth Street, where the woman got out and made a second purchase of an alcoholic beverage under the watchful eyes of the officers who had followed the vehicle from the liquor store.
The officers followed the truck from West Fourth Street to the 300 block of Rural Avenue, where Payton got out, according to an affidavit. The truck continued to the 600 block of Third Avenue, where, after it stopped, the officers questioned the three in the vehicle, obtained their identities and seized the alcoholic beverages, court records state.
While Carey, 19, Sykes, 18, and Nichols, all were charged with underage drinking, Payton has been arrested on misdemeanor offenses of furnishing alcohol to minors and unlawful activities involving liquor. Following her recent arraignment before District Judge Allen P. Page III, she was released on $1,500 bail.
