Ilene Evelyn Keeney Rifenberg, 97, longtime resident of Sayre, passed away at The Robert Packer Hospital on the morning of Sept. 17, 2013.
Ilene was born on May 17, 1916, the daughter of Blanche Hugo Keeney and Arthur Keeney. She graduated number one in her class from New Albany High School in 1933 and top in her class at the Robert Packer School of Nursing in 1937.
In December of 1938 she married Lloyd Rifenberg and shared a loving marriage until his passing in 2008.
Ilene worked for many years for Dr. Langley in the allergy department and was a friend of Dr. Guthrie. As a member of Sayre Christian Church for many years, she was a member of the choir, served as a deacon and taught Sunday school. She was a member of Tioga Point D.A.R, Athens Senior Citizens Club as well as the Ladies Auxiliary of the U.T.U.
After many years of dedication to her three sons in their various athletics and academic ventures, she spent a great deal of time doing charitable work. Ilene is credited with knitting in excess of 1,000 pairs of scarves and mittens for the homeless. She and Lloyd enjoyed a great retirement traveling and vacationing in Hawaii and Florida as well as the Caribbean.
Family was always first to Ilene and she was always ready to help in any way she could. She had a "green thumb" and could grow any plant or vegetable. Ilene was always grateful for a complicated crossword puzzle or a challenging game of Scrabble.
Ilene is predeceased by her parents; a loving step-father, Robert Browning; a sister, Winifred Thorton; her husband, Lloyd; and her eldest son, James.
She is survived by her sons, Donald Lee Rifenberg and David George Rifenberg; grandchildren, Steven Rifenberg, Susan Knickerbocker, Melissa Reynolds, Julie Berger, Kirsten Wellman and Wil Rifenberg; seven great-grandchildren; and special niece, Linda Boviard.
The family wishes to thank the faithful caregivers and neighbors that made it possible for Ilene to remain in the family home.
A memorial service to celebrate Ilene's life will be held at the Sayre Christian Church at 11 a.m. on Oct. 26, 2013, followed by a light lunch at the church.
