Derrick Johnson doesn't aspire to be just another restaurant owner.
He'd rather offer something a bit different, such as New York style cuisine.
"I don't want to be the usual," he said.
New York Deli & Cuisine, 452 Market St., offers an eclectic menu of both domestic and international cooking.
Where else around Lycoming County can customers sit down to enjoy say, Shish Tawook, a meal of chunks of chicken marinated in Lebanese sauce?
Or how about Tarb, an Egyptian ground lamb favorite?
"I want to surprise my customers," he said.
Patrons heading into his eatery in downtown Williamsport just off Little League Boulevard will likely find Johnson himself behind the grill chopping up vegetables or meat to prepare a meal.
Having once lived in New York, he said he wants to bring that city's flavor and style to his business.
He said he's hoping his restaurant draws the downtown business crowd, students from nearby Lycoming College and others.
The restaurant serves breakfast, lunch and dinner.
Some of the sandwiches include the Buffalo Chicken Grinder, Philly Cheesesteak and the Brooklyn Reuben.
Early morning customers can stop by for a fresh cup of coffee.
WiFi service is available in the restaurant.
Johnson formerly operated International Taste of Williamsport, a mobile restaurant which he often parked near Mom's Diner on West Third Street.
"So many people coming by the mobile unit said it would be wonderful to sit down somewhere. They made that request a lot of times," he said.
His customers included Pennsylvania College of Technology students, and he's hopeful he'll see some of those patrons at his new place.
He found a partner, Zia Bhatti, to help him get started on his new venture and feels confident his restaurant will be successful.
"If you can duplicate New York cuisine it will always be a big hit if you do it authentically," he said.
