Martha L. Shuman, 81, a resident of Williamsport, passed away Tuesday, June 24, 2014, at Sycamore Manor.
She was born in Williamsport on Oct. 2, 1932. Martha was the daughter of Leslie N. Painton and Margaret (Egli) Painton. Her father, known to many as "Tip," was a founding member of the Faxon-Kenmar United Methodist Church, and was one of the first volunteer firefighters for Loyalsock Township. He also served on the Loyalsock Township school board.
Martha graduated from Williamsport High School in 1950 and attended Lycoming College. On Aug. 17, 1955, she married the love of her life, John E. Shuman Jr., and together they raised six children, Susan, John, Ame, Matthew, Jill and Beth. Martha and John shared 54 years of marriage until John's death on Dec. 9, 2009.
Martha was a member of the Faxon-Kenmar United Methodist Church and served as a volunteer at the church's thrift store which was located at the former Becht Elementary School. Previously, she was a member of Faith United Methodist Church in Montoursville.
Through the years she was employed at Avco, Strohemann's and The Bon Ton. More recently, she was employed at Smith Rudasill Interiors.
Martha enjoyed spending time with her family, knitting with her friend Sally and playing cards with several of her closest friends, especially Donna, Arlene and Susie. She also appreciated her long conversations with her good friend Mickey. For many years Martha and John enjoyed making their famous chocolate peanut butter fudge.
She is survived by her children, Susan L. Shuman, of Williamsport, John D. Shuman, of California, Ame L. Shuman (Marc G. Pompeo), of Williamsport, Matthew L. (Jill Anne) Shuman, of Williamsport, Jill M. Shuman (Dennis E. Emig, Sr.), of South Williamsport, Beth A. Shuman-Byerly (Jeffrey A. Byerly), of Williamsport; four grandchildren, Lesley A. Shuman, of Williamsport, Andrew M. Shuman, of Siler City, N.C., and Sarah R. and Sam N. Shuman, of Austin Texas.
A memorial service for Martha and John will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, July 1, 2014, at Faxon-Kenmar United Methodist Church, with Rev. Michael Swimley officiating. Burial will be private and at the convenience of the family in Twin Hills Memorial Park.
The family suggests that memorial contributions be made in Martha and John's name to Faxon-Kenmar United Methodist Church, 1301 Clayton Ave., Williamsport, PA 17701, or Susquehanna Health Home Care and Hospice, Divine Providence Hospital, 1100 Grampian Blvd., Fourth Floor, Williamsport, Pa.
