The Uptown Music Collective will present its annual free Summer Music Festival from 1 to 9 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 3 at Williamsport's Brandon Park Band Shell.
The day's events will include free music clinics from area musicians and music performances all day, as well as children's activities and food vendors. The event will culminate with an exclusive, one time only performance, entitled "1967: The Summer of Love," performed by some of the Collective's top students.
Featured clinics from area musicians and music professionals include a gypsy jazz guitar clinic from Deron Johnson; a drum clinic from Grammy-award-winning drummer Steve Mitchell; a bass clinic from inventor and owner of Wittman Spins Kenny Wittman; and a keyboard clinic from blues and jazz pianist Steve Adams.
The day also will feature a variety of performances, including the annual Collective Summer Student Recital, in which students are featured performing songs of their choosing in full-band arrangements.
The "1967: The Summer of Love" performance will feature some of the Uptown Music Collective's most experienced performers playing classic songs from the year 1967. Artists will include Janis Joplin, Jefferson Airplane, Jimi Hendrix, The Spencer Davis Group, The Doors and more.
"We were looking for a summer themed performance for our main performance group to bring to the stage as a one night only event," said Dave Brumbaugh, Uptown Music Collective executive director.
"The students and I discussed a few ideas and someone suggested the Summer of Love, there was an instant excitement in the room," he said. "My students are really pumped to bring perform these songs to the stage."
Throughout the day, there will be raffles and giveaways including gift certificates from local businesses. The grand prize, given away before the closing of the event, will be a brand new electric guitar. Food vendors and free face-painting also will be on hand.
