The Delaney Heller Foundation and Helping Hands From Hudson will hold a "Kids Against Cancer" cornhole tournament at Pier 87, 5647 Route 87 Sept. 6.
Registration will be held from 10:30 to 11:30 and the tournament will begin at noon.
The event is the first joint event held by the two organizations, which event coordinators hope will help to strengthen the support for area kids and overall awareness for pediatric cancer, according to Tom Rinker. Rinker is the father of Hudson Rinker, who lost his battle with cancer just before his second birthday.
Rinker said the money raised during the event will be available for area children and their families that the organizations work with.
"Between our two organizations, we have provided financial assistance to families, provided wish gifts to children, supplied comfort items to kinds and families and several children's hospitals, sponsored pediatric cancer fundraising events, donated to the Make A Wish Foundation for Lycoming County children and awarded scholarships to Williamsport and Montoursville graduating seniors for college," Rinker said. "Funds raised from this event will go toward our continued efforts and to provide support for kids with cancer."
There will be a special set of cornhole boards that will be raffled or auctioned off the day of the event. All participants will be provided with lunch, soda, water and a T-shirt. A cash bar also will be available. Other auctions and raffles also will take place during the event.
"Our hopes are that we can raise awareness for childhood cancer, while raising monies to help more local families that hear those devastating words 'your child has cancer.' "
September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, represented by the color gold. The organizations whill be promoting awareness activities throughout September.
"Last year we coordinated with the area high school sports teams to wear gold during games and the Genetti Hotel, Mayor Campana and the city of Williamsport to recognize September as Childhood Cancer Awareness Month," Rinker said.
There is a fee to participate in the event. There are openings for a maximum of 64 teams and cash prizes will be awarded to winners depending on the number of teams participating. Team members must be at least 15 years old and the event also is in need of sponsors. Rain date for the event will be Sept. 7.
