Atencio comes up clutch for LA
Here is a closer look at Maracaibo, Venezuela’s 8-7 win over Guadalupe, Mexico on Monday at Volunteer Stadium.
PLAY OF THE GAME: Luis Atencio came up with runners on second and third and two outs. Down by a run he had the chance to be the difference-maker in the game and he came through. Atencio drilled a 2-0 pitch into right which drove in the first run. Then the second run came in via throwing error which put Venezuela up for good, 8-7.
MEXICO PLAYER OF THE GAME: Angel Castillo was good in the field but was even better at the plate. Castillo finished 3 for 3 with two RBIs and a big fourth-inning double. He also pitched after the starter was lifted and allowed just two hits over 2 2/3 innings.
VENEZUELA PLAYER OF THE GAME: The hero of the game is Atencio who might have saved their season. He started the game on the mound but made a much bigger impact at the plate. He drove in two runs but they were the biggest runs Venezuela might have scored all season. Ripping a pitch into left, he put Venezuela up by a winning margin of 8-7.
BIG INNING: Latin America trailed all game long, but when it was do-or-die time they came through. After the first two runners reached on walks and and error, Randy Soto came up and drove in a run to make it a one-run game. Then with two outs Atancio drove a pitch to right to score the winning runs.
BEST EFFORT: Venezuela reserve Deivis Ordonez was looking to see if he could throw off the pitcher, so he came up to bat crouched down at the plate. His approach did not exactly work but it did throw off a lot of people including the pitcher.
FLASHING LEATHER: Erick Vigil went back very deep at shortstop to get a hard-hit groundball. He grabbed it and quickly threw it to second baseman Castillo who made a heads up play and saw the runners foot was off the base and quickly laid down the tag to get the out. Mexico got out of the inning without allowing a run.
HOME RUNS: Devirik Fuenmayor smoked the first pitch he saw against Mexico in the first inning deep for a two-run shot to tie the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the first inning.
WHAT IT MEANS: Venezuela moves on and play another elimination game today at Lamade Stadium against Curacao. Mexio is eliminated from the tournament after going 1-2.
