Local roundup: D4 tennis semis set; Sock, JS boys win HAC XC titles

LOCK HAVEN UNIVERSITY PHOTO Lock Haven’s wrestling team held its first official practice Tuesday, a “Midday Matness” session outside in the middle of campus in some sunny fall weather. The Bald Eagles return all four NCAA qualifiers from last year in D.J. Felhman at 133, Kyle Shoop at 141, Ronnie Perry at 149, and Thomas Haines at 285. Perry, a two-time qualifier, will move up to 149 and Shoop will drop to 141. LHU also hopes for big things from Tristan Sponseller at 197, Corey Hazel dropping from 184 to 174, and the return of Chance Marsteller at 165.

Loyalsock, Hughesville, Jersey Shore and Montgomery advanced to the District 4 AA girls tennis team tournament semifinals next Tues­day with wins on Tuesday.

Loyalsock defeated CV 3-0. Hughesville defeated Montoursville 3-1. Hughesville’s Rachel Thomas won No. 1 singles over Maddy Reeves, 6-2, 6-1. Shore defeated Wellsboro 3-0. Cas­sidy Rell won No. 2 singles 6-4, 6-3 over Morgan Guthrie. Mont­gomery defeated Milton 3-0. Bryanna McHenry and Emily Wolfgang won No. 1 doubles 6-2, 6-1 over Milton’s Chloe Perrin and Emily Snyder.

Williamsport fell to Abington Heights 4-1 in the semifinal round of the District 2/4 AAA team tennis tournament. Williamsport’s Desiree Aversa and Madison Marchess won No. 2 doubles 6-3, 6-3.

• In boys soccer, Central Columbia defeated Muncy 5-0. Matthew Yoder scored two goals in the first and 11th minute. Brendan Gregory, William Bodenman and Jakob Morris each had a goal. Muncy’s Josh Hall (9) and Grady Oden (5) combined for 14 saves.

Alex Reed scored off a Brady Dowell assist to tie the game at 1-1, but Midd-West capitalized off an own goal in the second half for a 2-1 win over Loyalsock.

• In girls soccer, Emma Poirier scored two goals, Karrah and Kailee Clymer each had a goal and an assist as Wellsboro defeated Towanda 4-1.

Warrior Run kept its postseason hopes alive with a 4-1 win over Mount Carmel. The Defenders got goals from Avery Bieber, Brooke Lininger, Latricia Yocum and Keirra Trivelpiece, and led 3-0 before Mount Carmel scored.

Macy McCarthy had a goal and assist, but Sullivan County lost to Troy, 4-2. Bethany Beinlich also scored and Madison Burke had an assist.

Four different Lancers scored in Loyalsock’s 4-0 win over Hughes­ville. Jenna Gardner, Julian­na Cruz, Rhallie Jessell, and Charlotte Neylon each scored.

Jessica Umpstead scored the go-ahead goal for Montgomery with 23 minutes remaining to lift the Red Raiders to a 2-1 win over St. John Neumann on Montgomery’s Senior Night in a Mid-Penn Conference game. St. John Neumann led early before Kara Hahn tied it at 1-1 with 20 minutes to play in the first half.

Milton earned its first win of the year by defeating Danville, 3-2, thanks to two goals in the first half. Aubrey Chappell scored twice for the Black Panthers while Crystal Hamilton added a goal.

• In women’s soccer, Madi Welliver records 13 saves in a Lycoming 1-0 loss to Albright. The lone score came in the 46th minute from Albright’s Kenney Lutz.

• In cross country, North Penn-Mansfield’s girls swept CV and Wellsboro. CV’s Jules Jones crossed the line first in 21:49. Mansfield’s Lauren Ensminger (23:30) and Wellsboro’s Anna Belggi (23:52) rounded out the top three. Th eCV boys defeated North Penn-Mansfield and Wellsboro. CV’s Madden Dond (18:27), Wellsboro’s Aidan Perry (18:34) and Mansfield’s Blake Nelson (18:55) finished as the top three.

Abby Gerst, Emma Butzler finished second and third, respectively, as Jersey Shore girls swept Shikellamy, Shamokin and Selins­grove. Gerst crossed the line at 22:53 and Butzler not far behind in 23:02. Isaac Davis leads Jersey Shore boys PHAC title as it defeated Shikel­lamy, Shamokin and Selinsgrove. Davis ran a course record 16:18 in his first-place finish. Hunter Mammert finished third at 18:26.

Warrior Run girls swept Mif­flinburg, Loyalsock and Williams­port as Lauren Trapani, Isabell Sagar finished 1-2. Trapani crossed in 18:24, Sagar at 19:40. Wil­liamsport’s Mary McMahon finished fifth in 20:24. On thecboys, Loyalsock clinched the PHAC title as Quinn Serfass finished third behind Williamsport’s Tyler Hol­comb (16:49) and Mifflinburg’s Quin­ton Long. Warrior Run’s Damien Moser took fifth in 17:22.

Lewisburg’s boys swept Midd-West and Central Mountain competition as it took nine of the top ten finishes. Jason Stanko (17:52), Calvin Bailey (17:54) and Steven Stiner (18:02) finished top three.

• In men’s golf, Penn College had two teams finish second and third, and Lycoming finished 8th overall in Penn College Invitational at Williasmport Country Club. Penn College’s Austin Moscariello took second with a three-over par 74. Lycoming’s Alec Sabatino finished in 16th with an 86.

• In women’s volleyball, Lock Haven fell to Pitt-Johnstown 25-18, 25-15, 25-18. Shaye Whiteman (16), Roni Morrison (10) and Kristen Nealon (10) each had double-digit digs in the match.Breanna Mc­Donald led the Bald Eagles with 8 kills.

Elmira defeated Penn College in three sets. Jordyn Smeltzer, Emalie Marnati and Savanna Slough each had three kills for the Wildcats. Sophie Coldsmith had 11 assists and eight blocks.

Lycoming took Arcadia to five sets in a loss. Lilly Singleton led the Warriors with 15 kills and had 14 digs.
