Playoff brackets released for baseball and softball

Area baseball and softball teams begin journeys that they hope conclude in State College next week.

The District 4 playoff pairings were released Saturday night and games in both baseball and softball start Tuesday.

The Class AAAA and AA baseball tournaments open Tuesday with the higher seeds hosting games. Area teams playing include No. 1 Jersey Shore hosting No. 8 Shikellamy, No. 4 Lewisburg hosting No. 5 CMVT and No. 7 Milton going to No. 2 Athens. Semifinals will be Friday.

In the Class AA, quarterfinals it will be an all-area showdown as No. 2 South Williamsport hosts No. 7 Muncy. Top-seeded Wellsboro earned a bye into Friday’s semifinals.

The AAA and A tournaments open Wednesday and continue Saturday with the semifinals. In Class AAA, No. 1 Montoursville hosts Wednesday’s Central Columbia/Mount Carmel winner. No. 2 Loyalsock plays the winner of Wednesday’s Towanda/Danville game the same day.

The Class A quarterfinals feature four area teams playing Wednesday. No. 6 Canton plays at No. 3 Montgomery and No. 5 St. John Neumann plays at No. 4 Cowanesque Valley. The Canton/Montgomery winner plays at No. 2 Sayre Saturday and the Neumann/CV winner plays at No. 1 Millville Saturday.

Williamsport will play through District 2 as it seeks a second straight championship. It is the top seed and will host either West Scranton or Scranton Wednesday at Logue Field. The winner plays for the championship on Memorial Day at PNC Stadium in Moosic.

The softball playoffs also open Tuesday and there will be many games involving area teams. No. 5 Milton will compete in the Class AAAA semifinals, traveling to Athens. The winner of that game plays top-seeded Jersey Shore in Thursday’s semifinals at Turbotville’s Moser Complex where all softball semifinals will be held.

The AAA field features 11 teams and there will be three first-round games Tuesday. No. 11 Hughesville plays at No. 6 Mifflinburg and No. 10 Central Columbia heads to No. 7 Wellsboro. The quarterfinals start Thursday. Top seeded Warrior Run hosts the Bloomsburg/Towanda winner. No. 2 Loyalsock welcomes the Central/Wellsboro winner, Lewisburg hosts the Hughesville/Mifflinburg winner and No. 5 CMVT plays at No. 4 North Penn-Liberty. Semifinals will be Tuesday, May 29.

The Class A quarterfinals open Tuesday with No. 3 Montgomery hosting No. 6 Bucktail and No. 4 Cowanesque Valley playing No. 5 Galeton. The Bucktail/Montgomery winner plays in Thursday’s semifinal against No. 2 Northeast Bradford. Following that game top-seeded Sullivan County plays the Galeton/CV winner.

Williamsport earned the No. 2 seed in the District 2-4 Class AAAAAA playoffs and hosts No. 3 Scranton Thursday at Elm Park.
