Aklinski’s homer leads Cutters to win over Mahoning Valley

NILES, Ohio — Ben Aklinski hit a three-run home run in the seventh inning, leading the Williamsport Crosscutters to an 8-4 win over the Mahoning Valley Scrappers on Sunday.

The home run by Aklinski scored Seth Lancaster and Keudy Bocio to give the Crosscutters a 4-2 lead as Aklinski capped a five-RBI night with that bomb.

The Crosscutters later tacked on four runs in the eighth, including a two-run single by Alec Bohm.

Bohm finished the night 2 for 3 with a pair of RBIs, his first multi-RBI game in a Cutters uniform. Rafael Marchan plated a run for the Cutters, finishing the night 1 for 5.

Brayan Gonzalez, Ben Pelletier and Lancaster each recorded two hits as Lancaster scored three runs in the win. In total, seven of the nine Cutters recorded a hit and eight of the nine Cutters reached base.

Jack Perkins allowed one run on three hits in his second start for Williamsport. James McArthur recorded the win, allowing one run on one hit in the back end of the piggyback start. Juan Escorcia allowed a pair of runs over the final three innings of relief, earning his first save.

Aklinski’s home run was the first home run for the Crosscutters in the month of July, as the Crosscutters were the only team in the New York-Penn League without a home run in July entering play. It was the Cutters first home run since June 28th at State College.

Luis Valdez (0-1) took the loss for Mahoning Valley.

Richard Palacios tripled and singled twice, driving in two runs for the Scrappers.

After a seven-game losing streak, the Crosscutters have won two of three and will look to take their first series win since they swept Auburn from June 18-20.

Williamsport stays in Mahoning Valley for one more night when it takes on the Scrappers in the finale of the three-game series.

Before a day off on Tuesday, the Cutters return home for a three-game series with Tri-City on Wednesday.
