Cutters blow lead then come back to top West Virginia

Matt Kroon’s two-run single through the right side in the top of the ninth inning lifted the Williamsport Crosscutters to a 5-4 win over the West Virginia BlackBears on Saturday evening at Monongalia County Ballpark.

Kroon’s game-winning single scored both Jake Holmes and Brayan Gonzalez, who reached on a walk and single, respectively.

The Crosscutters nearly blew a 3-0 lead after a Danny Mayer RBI single in the first and an RBI double from Ben Pelletier and another RBI single from Mayer in the fifth inning.

West Virginia came back and put up a run in the sixth and seventh and a two-run single in the eighth gave it a 4-3 lead.

Juan Escorcia pitched 5 2/3 innings of two-hit ball for Williamsport, allowing an unearned run and striking out six.

Jose Jiminez earned the win for Williamsport, getting the final out in the bottom of the eighth. Keylan Kilgore pitched a clean ninth with two strikeouts to earn his ninth save.

Mayer led an 11-hit team-effort at the plate, going 3 for 4 while Rafael Marchan, Ben Pelletier and Kroon each added two hits for Williamsport, which was 5 for 6 with runners in scoring position.
