Lewisburg girls are state bound
For the first time since 2009, the Lewisburg girls soccer team is heading to the state tournament.
Lewisburg defeated Central Columbia, 5-1, on Wednesday to advance to the District 4 Class AA girls soccer championship game.
Selena Permyashkin scored twice and Taryn Beers added a goal and assist for the Green Dragons. Allison Reed and Chloe Michaels both scored as well.
From a defensive standpoint, the Green Dragons yielded only three shots on goal to the Blue Jays.
Milton took an early lead thanks to a Leah Bergey penalty kick, but Midd-West would go on to defeat the Black Panthers, 3-1, to advance to the Class AA final.
It was Milton’s first appearance in the district semifinals since 2009.
• In boys soccer, Jersey Shore couldn’t get its offense going and lost in a rout to Athens, 8-0, in the District 4 Class AAA semifinals. Athens scored four goals in each half.
• In women’s field hockey, Kyra Wozniak had a hat trick to lift No. 6 Kutztown to a 4-0 victory over Mansfield. Wozniak scored twice in the first half and added another goal in the second half for the Golden Bears.
Meghan Griffin put two shots on goal for Mansfield and Brittany Ryan made 11 saves. Madison Wilinsky was credited with a defensive save early in the second half.
Three Bucknell players were named to the Academic All-Patriot League. Nicole Rupnik earned the honor for the third straight year, Marisa Morakis received the award for the second time, and Lexi Quick made her first appearance on the list. The three honorees was tied for the most in the conference. Rupnik ranks third on the team with 14 points on six goals and two assists this season.
• No. 4 seed West Chester scored late in the first half and early in the second half to edge the No. 5-seeded Lock Haven women’s soccer team, 2-0, in the PSAC playoffs. With the loss, LHU bows out of the 2018 PSAC Tournament, Lock Haven’s first PSAC postseason appearance in 12 years.
Central Mountain grad Bree Hilty did all she could to keep the Bald Eagles in the tightly contested match and she finished with three saves.
West Chester opened the scoring late in the first half after Madison Baxter made it 1-0 in the 40th minute. The late first-half goal helped the Golden Rams hold a 1-0 halftime lead.
• Lock Haven’s volleyball team lost to Bloomsburg, 3-2 (23-25, 23-25, 25-20, 25-23, 17-15). The Bald Eagles and Huskies battled back and forth in the first set. Lock Haven was led by Kristen Nealon, who racked up 55 assists to surpass the 2,000 career assist mark. She now has 2,012.
Breanna McDonald led the team defensively with 16 kills.
• Bucknell senior defender Maddie Dano picked up another postseason honor when she was named to the Academic All-Patriot League women’s soccer team. Dano, who was also a second-team All-Patriot League selection earlier this week, was one of 11 women’s soccer student-athletes selected from across the 10-team league.
Dano played every minute of every game at center back for the Bison this season. She recorded a goal and two assists, and was one of the league’s top defenders on a team that finished in fourth place during the regular season.
• For the second straight year, Lycoming senior Emily Hepner has earned a spot on the All-MAC Commonwealth team, claiming honorable mention status.
Hepner finished off one of the best careers in Lycoming volleyball’s history, as she posted a school-record 2,208 digs in her four years as the team’s libero, averaging 4.81 digs per set. She is eighth amongst active players in Division III in the category.
