College roundup: Lycoming women win thanks to 3 by Kline at buzzer

In women’s basketball, down two with 5.6 seconds left, Kayla Kline inbounded the ball, ran behind the 3-point line in the center of the court and took a dribble handoff from Kelly Vuz, dribbled once and lifted a high-arcing shot that bounced off the glass and through the net as the clock ticked under a second left, giving Lycoming a 66-65 win over Widener in a battle for second place in the MAC Commonwealth.

The 3-point basket gave Lycoming (8-3 overall, 5-1 MAC Commonwealth) its first and only lead of the game, as the Warriors rallied back from a 12-point deficit midway through the third. After the bucket, Widener called timeout with 0.8 seconds left and were able to inbounds and throw a shot off the rim, but it fell away, setting off a celebration for the visitors.

Akilah McFadden, a Lewisburg graduate, posted a season-high 19 points to go with five rebounds, four steals and two assists to lead the Warriors. Kline finished with 16 points, nine rebounds and five assists and Erica Lutz added 14 points and nine rebounds. Vuz, making her first collegiate start, finished with five points and two assists and senior Shelby Schoonover added five points and two rebounds.

Penn College erased a 3-point deficit with an 8-3 run in the final two minutes of the game, to top Bryn Mawr, 64-62. The Wildcats improved to 1-8 on the season. Madison Klock scored a game-high 21 points for Penn College. Kaylah Brown finished 16 points and Maci Ilgen netted 10. Cassi Kuhns, a Loyalsock graduate, notched her first double-double this season with 11 points and a game-high 12 rebounds.

Abby Kapp hit four 3-pointers and finished with a team-high 16 points to lead Bucknell to an 80-59 win over Rider. The Bison, who were playing for the first time in 13 days, improved to 8-2 with their sixth-straight win. It’s the program’s best 10-game record in 32 years.

Rider took a 29-26 lead into the half, but Kapp caught fire from long range to give the Bison a 30-19 advantage in the third quarter and a 56-48 lead in the game. She connected for three 3-pointers and had 13 points in the quarter. It was the eighth time this season the Bison scored 25 or more points in a quarter and the seventh time in the last six games.

“That first half was a huge credit to Rider,” Bucknell head coach Aaron Roussell said. “They were able to be physical with us, pushed us off our spots, and really had us on our heels. They were aggressive and played well. It’s not often that we get moved around like that.”

Bucknell continued to pull away in the final quarter, just missing 25 points as it out-scored Rider 24-11. Eight players scored for the Bison in the quarter, led by Walls with seven on a 3-pointer and four free throws.

• In men’s basketball, Lycoming had four players finish in double-figures, but the team fell to deep-shooting Widener, 84-71.

The Warriors (5-6 overall, 1-5 MAC Commonwealth) shot 48 percent (29-of-60) from the field compared to 43 percent (28-of-64) from Widener (7-3 overall, 4-1 MAC Commonwealth). However, the Pride connected on 47 percent (9-of-19) from three and outscored Lycoming, 22-17, off turnovers.

Freshman Markanthony Fidelis, who leads the MAC Commonwealth in 3-point field goal percentage and 3-pointers made, was 4-of-6 from three, marking his third straight game knocking down three or more shots from deep, as he led the team with 15 points.

Matt Ilodigwe scored a career-high 11 points and freshman D’Andre Edmond dropped in 10 points to highlight 29 bench points.

NC State shot 60 percent from the field for the game and used an 12-0 run over a four-minute stretch in the second half to pull to an 89-78 win over Penn State in the Boardwalk Classic Saturday afternoon. Freshman guard Rasir Bolton had his third career outing with 20 or more points with a game-high 25, including 18 in the second period.

Bolton hit back-to-back free throws twice in 60 seconds to keep PSU within four at 66-62 2H, 8:17) and 68-64 (2H, 7:35), but NC State went 3-3 from the field and Nittany Lions 0-6 in the same period. The Wolfpack effort was buoyed with five more points from seven trips to the free throw line as well.

“We go on these little dry spells and that’s what happens at the end of the game there, we had a spell and they extended their lead, they made shots, they made plays, that’s what really won the game, during that stretch,” said Nittany Lion basketball coach Patrick Chambers. “As long as we continue to get better, as long as we stay the course. I still believe, I believe in this team. I believe we have a really talented team and that will show as we progress here.”

The Wolfpack followed 53.1 percent shooting in the first half with a blistering 17-24 from the field for 70 percent in the second half and had a 46-34 points-in-the-paint and 40-29 rebound advantage for the game.

After the second-half run, NC State withstood Penn State’s late rally as the Nittany Lions battled back from a 16-point deficit to cut the lead to nine.

Even with Stevens on the bench, saddled with foul trouble with three in the first half and a quick fourth early in the second half, Penn State grabbed a one-point lead 56-55 with just under 13 minutes to play. Bolton hit a trey and Wheeler converted a layup and free throw after pulling down the defensive rebound, but the Wolfpack’s Markell Johnson connected on a 3-pointer to put NC State back up by two, 58-56.

Stevens, who scored the first three baskets for the Nittany Lions after halftime, re-entered the game with 9:21 left to play and grabbed his 500th career rebound about two minutes later.
