Local roundup: Canton rides big first quarter to win over Montgomery

In boys basketball, Canton jumped out to a 27-6 first-quarter lead en rout to a 66-44 win over Montgomery. Ben Knapp led Canton with 14 points while Michael Smithers (13) and Cooper Kitchen (12) combined for 25. Kalen Guyer led Montgomery with 13 points.

• In girls basketball, Grace Kelleher scored a game-high 16 points, but Lewisburg narrowly fell to Southern Columbia, 46-44.

Canton jumped out to an early first quarter lead, but was outscored in each of the remaining three quarters, resulting in a 37-23 defeat at the hands of Athens. Tamara Hess finished with a team-high 10 points.

In a defensive showdown against two teams looking to jolt their season in the right direction, Montoursville came away with a 27-21 victory over Hughesville. Maddie Adams finished with a team-high 10 points while going 6 of 8 from the line.

Emma Poirier netted a game-high 21 points to lead Wellsboro to a 71-49 victory over North Penn-Liberty. Cathryn Brought added 14 for the Green Hornets.

Katelyn Wilson knocked down five 3-pointers for a game-high 23 points to lead Williamsport past Bellefonte, 73-62. Jada Whaley added 19 points while going 8 of 10 from the line for the Millionaires.

• In high school wrestling, Robert Gardner picked up South Williamsport’s lone win with a 10-7 decision at 106 pounds, as the Mounties fell to Southern Columbia, 66-3.

Grant Adams (285), Justin Gessner (132), Logan Bartlett (138), Austin Ruhl (145), Ronnie Lentz (160) and Dakotah Snyder (220) all won via pin as Lewisburg dominated the contested matches on its way to an 84-0 win over Loyalsock.

Colby Puderbach earned a pin at 145, but Montgomery dropped a narrow match to Benton, 42-36.

• In boys swimming, Ross Flerage (50-yard freestyle) and Riley Hockman (200-yard Individual Medley) each earned individual wins and helped their respective relay teams’ to victories to help Williamsport defeat Central Mountain 79-50.

• In girls swimming, Lydia Smith picked up individual wins in the 100-yard freestyle and the 22-yard Individual Medley, while helping the 200-yard medley relay team to a first place finish to lead Williamsport to a 100-70 victory over Central Mountain.

• In men’s basketball, Penn College dropped a 110-72 decision to SUNY Delhi. Ryan Lockman paced Penn College with 20 points and grabbed five rebounds. Loyalsock graduate Ben Sosa finished with 14 points and seven rebounds and Elijah Vazquez netted 10 in his Penn College debut, but SUNY Delhi hit 20 of 39 3-pointers and opened up a 60-30 halftime lead.

• In women’s basketball, Penn College fell to Misericordia, 88-46. The Wildcats fell to 1-10, while the Cougars remained unbeaten at 12-0. The Wildcats were led by a team-high 13 points and five rebounds by Gwendolyn Lavelle.
