Lewisburg sweeps Montoursville in boys, girls

BRETT R. CROSSLEY/Sun-Gazette Correspondent Lewisburg’s Christian Coleman competes in the 200 IM during a dual meet against Montoursville on Thursday afternoon at Lycoming College.

Montoursville’s seniors were honored for their commitments to the swimming program as Lewisburg headed up Route 15 for both teams’ final dual meet of the season.

Both teams were nearly in postseason mode as the meet opened with the 200 medley and ran through to the 400 free relay. The event stayed competitive throughout the meet, featuring close races and come-from-behind wins during nearly every race.

Lewisburg swept the meet, as the boys won, 87-81, and the girls won, 121-45.

“All the seniors are role models and it’s important for the seniors to go out and give it one last try,” Montoursville’s Sam Jordan said. “We had a couple of the underclassmen qualify for districts. It’s just a fun meet to give it your all.”

Thomas Haynos made an outstanding comeback in the 200 free after falling behind to Jacob Fellinger early in the race. He overtook Fellinger during the second lap and held a lead until a late push from Fellinger.

Haynos won the race with a time of 2:05.49 with Fellinger right behind him with a 2:07.49.

“This meet is the last meet and my last meet,” Lewisburg’s Christian Coleman said. “We started out here and we’re ending here. It’s a fun meet.”

Lewisburg led on both sides at the halfway point as the boys led 32-29 and the girls were in front 44-18. Montoursville’s group of Sam Jordan, Angelo Silvagni, Kurtis Johnson, and Jacob Fellinger won the 200 medley relay for the Warriors. They would not win another event until Jordan and Johnson took the top two spots in the 50 free.

It was all Lewisburg for the girls during the first half of the meet as it won all four events to take a 26-point lead into the break. Alexandra Decker, who also helped on the 200 medley relay team, won the 200 free with a time of 2:08.47. It was the first individual win for the Dragons. Delaney Humphrey, also a swimmer on the 200 medley relay, won the 200 IM (2:22.25) and Sarah Burns won the 50 free (27.22). Humphrey went on to win the 100 fly with a 1:05.98.

“Today we really wanted to focus on getting our last group of kids qualified for districts,” Humphrey said. “We were actually supposed to have a meet Tuesday, but it got cancelled. We really wanted to make sure everybody qualified today.”

Lewisburg’s Jack Drouin looked good in the 100 fly as he led the race start to finish, clearing the field with a 1:05.24. It was well ahead of Tyler Hartsock’s 1:10.67, who finished second in the event.

Lewisburg’s Anna Batkowski was the lone swimmer to finish the 100 free under a minute. She posted a 58.39 to win the event. Her teammates Jewels Hepner finished second with a time of 1:00.42.

“We’re all just trying to get the little things down before districts,” Coleman said. “It’s the last time racing before districts and you have to just work on turns and the little stuff.”

Johnson continued to be a presence against Lewisburg as he won the 100 free with a time of 53.80. Johnson, who will surely be a favorite to win multiple events at the district meet, cleared the field by a good margin as he celebrated his senior night with a win. Evan Hamm (57.54) and Vaughn Holthus (59.53) rounded out the top three finishers in the event.

“It wasn’t my best, but it was still a good race,” Johnson said of the 100 free. “Arm speed is my big thing to work on. I’m looking forward to tapering and seeing what I can do.”

Jordan also continued to help the Warriors’ cause with a win in the 500 free. He cleared the field by a good margin and waited out the final swimmers as his 5:05.58 stood alone on the board for some time.

“I’m feeling pretty good,” Jordan said. “I swam a decent race in the 500, but I don’t think I’ll swim that at districts.”
