Danville duo takes district doubles title

Danville’s Dhruv Kotru and Blake Nizinski defeated Hughesville’s Logan Burns and Spencer Thomas, 6-3, 7-5, to take the District 4 Class AA tennis doubles championship on Monday afternoon at the PA Tennis Center.

Each duo will advancae to the state tournament in Hershey.

It’s Danville’s first doubles title since Sean Kopelcheck and Andrew Meschtner won back-to-back crowns in 2003 and 2004.

Central Columbia already won the team title and the singles (John Duncan) title.

In the semifinals, Kotru and Nizinski defeated Central Columbia’s Conor Ryan and Holden Hazzard, 6-3, 6-2. Burns and Thomas defeated Milton’s Zack Burkhart and Kyle Wagner, 6-2, 6-1 in the other semifinal.

Kotru and Nizinski, the No. 1 seed, had little trouble on the way to the title, as they never got to a third set throughout the tournament.

Burns and Thomas, went to a third set in their second-round match win over Lewisburg, but won in straight sets in the next two matches to get to the final.
