Districts begin Monday in baseball and softball

All that offseason and preseason work that at times might have seemed so tedious has paid off. Now all those who paid the price can reap the benefits, qualifying for the District 4 playoffs that open Monday for baseball and Tuesday for softball.

Thirteen area softball teams will fight for district supremacy and 11 will do so in baseball. No. 9 Wellsboro travels to No. 8 Troy in the only Monday baseball game with the winner facing top-seeded Montoursville Wednesday.

The action really picks up Tuesday as both the baseball and softball tournaments feature multiple games.

Looking at baseball, No. 5 Sullivan County plays its first playoff game since 2013 when it heads to No. 4 Canton in the District 4 Class A quarterfinals. The winner of that game plays top-seeded Millville in Thursday’s semifinals at Central Columbia. That same day No. 2 St. John Neumann will play No. 3 Montgomery in the other semifinal at 4 p.m. at Central. The championship is Wednesday, May 29 at Bowman Field.

The Class AA field features just three teams and No. 3 Sayre will play No. 2 Bloomsburg in the semifinals Thursday at Montgomery. Defending champion South awaits the winner in a Tuesday, May 28th championship at Bowman Field.

Four Class AAA baseball games will take place on Wednesday. In addition to Montoursville hosting the Wellsboro/Troy winner, No. 5 Loyalsock heads to No. 4 Athens; No. 6 Hughesville plays at No. 3 Central Columbia and No. 7 Towanda goes to No. 2 Mount Carmel. The semifinals are Friday at Central Columbia and the championship is Tuesday, May 28 at Bowman Field.

Lewisburg is the lone Class AAAA qualifier, earning the No. 4 seed and the defending champions host No. 5 Shamokin Tuesday. That winner will play top-seeded Selinsgrove in Saturday’s semifinals at Central Columbia with No. 3 Danville facing No. 2 Mifflinburg in the other semifinal.

Williamsport competes through District 2 and the two-time defending 6A champions earned the No. 2 seed in the five-team tournament. The Millionaires host No. 3 Delaware Valley Thursday. The winner of that game advances to the championship at PNC Field at 4 p.m. on Memorial Day.

The Williamsport softball team also has a semifinal against Delaware Valley. The Millionaires earned the No. 2 seed and play at Elm Park Tuesday.

Defending District 4 Class AAAA Jersey Shore is the No. 2 seed in its field and will play No. 3 Selinsgrove in Friday’s semifinals at the Moser Complex in Turbotville. That same day, top-seeded Mifflinburg faces the winner of Tuesday’s Shamokin-Danville game.

Thursday will be a busy day for District 4 Class AAA softball with four games going on. Top-seeded Loyalsock hosts rival No. 8 Montoursville, No. 7 North Penn-Liberty plays at No. 2 Warrior Run; No. 6 Wellsboro heads to No. 3 Central Columbia and No. 5 Bloomsburg goes to No. 4 Athens. The semifinals are Tuesday May 28 at the Moser Complex.

Muncy starts the Class AA playoffs Tuesday when it travels to play No. 4 Troy in the quarterfinals. That winner faces top-seeded and two-time defending champion Wyalusing Friday. No. 3 South Williamsport plays No. 2 Line Mountain that day’s early semifinal.

Class A also features one quarterfinal game with No. 5 Canton going to No. 4 Galeton Tuesday. The winner of that game plays top-seeded Bucktail at 5 p.m. Friday at the Moser Complex. No. 2 Montgomery plays No. 3 Northeast Bradford in that day’s early game at 3.
