Golf tip of the week: Putters should be adjusted for accuracy

PHOTO PROVIDED Proper loft and lie must be adjusted to fit a golfer’s stroke, similar to boresighting a firearm.

Most golfers could knock off five to ten strokes by having their putter adjusted to the proper loft and lie for their type putting stroke.

Putters are shipped from the factory to box stores and pro shops with approximately 3.5 to 4 degrees of loft.

The manufactured loft is a set industry standard. However, what matters is the actual loft at impact. Every golfer adds or decreases loft during their putting stroke. The loft should be adjusted to have a net loft of 3.5 to 4 degrees at impact.

The correct way to determine if a putter has the proper loft in motion is to visit a master club builder who utilizes a roll-board.

The putter loft should be adjusted, so it lifts the ball out of its resting area and takes one hop approximately 2.5 inches inducing over spin.

The lie should also be adjusted to ensure the ball rolls online to the target, very similar to boresighting a rifle.

A roll-board has a comparison chart to refer to for proper roll pattern.
