Local roundup: Sock girls track narrowly tops Montoursville

Loyalsock defeated Montoursville in a slim contest, 78-72, in girls track and field. The Lancers’ Isabell Sagar easily won the 1,600 and 3,200, winning the 1,600 by 30 seconds and cruising in the 3,200 to win by nearly 3 minutes.

Maddie Fox won the high jump by clearing 5 foot, 2 inches. Montoursville’s Lydia Albert earned wins in the 100 (13.40) and 200 (27.90). Lily Saul won the 400 for Montoursville in 1:00.90 and also won the 800 in 2:25.00.

Hughesville swept the wins in three throwing events to pace the Spartans in an 84-66 win over Bloomsburg. Amanda Derhammer won the shot put with a throw of 30 feet, 9 inches. Karlee Wallis took the discus (93-2) and Alex Snyder hit a mark of 113-3 to win the javelin. Cierra Getz won the 1,600 and 800 for Hughesville.

Rylie Mong hit a season’s-best in the pole vault, but Warrior Run fell to Southern Columbia, 86-64. Mong, a returning state placewinner, cleared 11-3 to surpass her previous best of the season of 11 feet, which she set Saturday. Lauren Trapani had wins in the 1,600 and 800 for Warrior Run.

Elizabeth Manning clocked a season’s-best time in the 400 and also won the 200, but South Williamsport lost to Mount Carmel, 125-24. Manning’s 1:02.6 in the 400 was her first time under 63 seconds in the event this season. She also ran a 27.5 in the 200.

Claire Miller took first place in back-to-back events and won three events overall as Williamson defeated Sayre, 95-54. Miller ran 16.6 to win the 100 hurdles and followed it up with a 13.5 to win the 100. She later rane 52.9 to take first in the 300 hurdles.

Elizabeth Macias won a pair of distance races as Wellsboro finished second in a tri-meet. Towanda took first with 78 points, Wellsboro was second with 62.5, and Montgomery was third with 40.5

Macias won the 1,600 in 6:30.1 and the 3,200 in 14:17.9 for the Green Hornets. Hallie McClure took first in the 400 (1:05.0) for Montgomery.

• Dom Caputo earned three individual wins in the long jump (20-8), high jump (5-10) and triple jump (43-7) as Montoursville defeated Loyalsock in boys track and field, 99-51.

Ian Plankenhorn won for Montoursville in the 300 hurdles with a time of 43.40, edging out Loyalsock’s Simeon Krizan by 0.10 seconds.

Nick Houseknecht picked up a pair of wins in the hurdle events, but it wasn’t enough for Hughesville as it fell to Bloomsburg, 75-71, in boys high school track and field. Housknecht clocked times of 18.23 in the 110 hurdles and 45.94 in the 300 hurdles to win both events. Ryan Bahr added a pair of wins on the track, winning the 1,600 and 800 for the Spartans.

Addison Magyar won a great showdown in the 800, but Warrior Run dropped a 90-60 decision to Southern Columbia. Magyar ran a 2:00.30 in the 800 to beat state 1,600 placewinner Ethan Knoebel, who ran a 2:03.20. Jack Watkins added a win in the discus, and Justis Brady won the high jump for the Defenders.

South Williamsport won just two events as it lost to Mount Carmel, 113-35. Gavin Hunsinger won the Mounties’ lone track event, taking the 110 hurdles in 19.1. Jake Lusk won the lone field event for South, winning the shot put with a a throw of 41-11.

Williamson took first place in all 18 events as it defeated Sayre, 120-30. Dylan Niles took first in the 110 and 300 hurdles, and Christopher Harris added victories in the 1,600 and 3,200 for the Warriors.

Wellsboro won four individual events and a relay to finish second in a tri-meet. Towanda finished first with 110.5 points. Wellsboro was second with 56 and Montgomery was third with 10.5. Brett Rudy (100), Cameron Tennis (200), Hunter Brown (javelin) and Frank Kewitt (triple jump) all scored individual wins for the Green Hornets.

• Montoursville exploded for nine runs in the top of the sixth inning to take the lead over Midd-West en route to an 11-6 win in softball.

MacKenzie Weaver, Jordan McCarthy, Taylor Shuman and Jaylynn Cochran all had doubles for the Warriors, who collected 15 hits.

Breanna Minnier went 3 for 4 with a double and four RBIs and Zuzu Shanaway was 2 for 3 with a triple and four RBIs as St. John Neumann defeated Sullivan County, 12-4. The Golden Knights jumped out to a 5-0 lead after two innings.

Mykenzie Malacusky (2 for 4), Jaeden Patson (2 for 4) and Carly Rupert (2 for 3) led Sullivan County.

Maegan Reitz went 4 for 4 and freshman Grace Shaible and Sam Stopper each drove in four runs as Loyalsock defeated Bloomsburg, 17-2 in four innings.

Stopper went 3 for 4 and Loyalsock scored 10 first-inning runs. Summer McNulty and Bella Barone each had two hits and two RBIs, while Cassie Gee went 2 for 4 with an RBI. Loyalsock (13-2, 8-0) stayed undefeated in the HAC-III entering Thursday’s game against second-place Warrior Run and has won 10 straight games.

Warrior Run used a four-run seventh inning to secure a 6-2 come-from-behind win over Hughesville. Hannah Michael had a triple for the Defenders and Jenna Davis led the Spartans with two singles.

Kerrah Clymer went 2 for 3 to continue her red-hot start to her sophomore season, however Wellsboro could not keep pace with Athens offense, falling 7-1.

Emily Snyder racked up 10 strikeouts and Morgan Tupper went 4 for 4 at the plate to lead Montgomery to a 15-0 victory.

Emily Hennigan scattered seven hits to hold Southern Columbia to two runs, while also going 3 for 3 with an RBI and a double to power South Williamsport to a 5-2 victory.

Hailey Stetts drilled a home run and Madi Knepp threw a complete-game gem to lead Jersey Shore to a hard-fought 3-2 win over Central Mountain.

• South Williamsport defeated Muncy in boys tennis, 4-1. Muncy’s win came at No. 2 doubles as Marshall Rothrock and Conner McLean defeated Trent Morrison and Ryan Branton, 6-4, 6-2.

South Williamsport’s Spencer Karasek won at No. 1 singles, 6-0, 6-0, over Muncy’s Trey McCollum.

• In college softball, Penn College defeated Penn State Abington, 5-2, in the first round of the North Eastern Athletic Conference playoffs.

Williamsport grad Taylor Brooks went 2 for 3 with two RBIs and a run scored.

• In college baseball, Penn College lost a doubleheader to Juniata, losing 6-0 and 6-5. In the second game, Juniata scored three runs in the top of the seventh to take the lead and win.
