Local roundup: West End 13s, 14s each advance to state semifinals
Grayson Rinker and Caleb Fausnaught combined to throw five innings of one-hit relief and Matt Conklin’s two-run double helped lift West End to a 9-6 win over UDHL in the Babe Ruth 14-year-old state tournament at Logue Field.
West End finishes pool play undefeated as the top seed and takes on UDHL again today at 4 p.m.
West End took a 3-0 second-inning lead, but UDHL posted six runs in the bottom half of the inning. West End, though, scored three runs on five straight hits in a game-changing fifth inning to take the lead. Conklin led West End with three hits and Ryan Evans and James Batkowski each added two.
• West End scored 10 runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to overcome two two-run deficits in its 12-4 win over Centre County in the Babe Ruth 13-year-old state tournament at Milroy.
Quinn Ranck earned the win, throwing a clean sixth and seventh inning. Cole Shuler led a nine-hit team-effort with four hits and Cayden Robertson added three hits and three RBIs for West End, which moves into the semifinals and takes on Centre County again today at 8 p.m.
