Cutters defeat Black Bears

GRANVILLE, W.Va. – A night after letting a five-run lead slip away, the Crosscutters’ pitching staff allowed just one run in a 5-1 road victory at West Virginia.

Williamsport jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the second inning and scored another in the fifth before West Virginia broke up the shutout with a run in the bottom of the seventh.

Williamsport scored three in the top of the eighth.

Leonel Aponte got the win on the mound, throwing 2 2/3 innings and yielding just three hits and one earned run. Alejandro Made earned the save, his fourth of the year, thanks to three innings of relief work.

Nicolas Torres hit his third double of the year to score Rudy Rott for Williamsport’s first run. Bryston Stott then doubled in the fifth for the 2-0 lead

The Crosscutters’ scored three runs in the eighth inning thanks to Rott and Torres both hitting singles.

Rott went 2 for 4 with an RBI and run scored and Herbert Iser was 2 for 3. Torres also went 2 for 4 and led the team with three RBIs.

Williamsport’s pitchers didn’t allow West Virginia to get timely hits, as the Black Bears were 1 for 9 with runners in scoring position and stranded 14 base runners.

Cory Wood was West Virginia’s only batter with multiple hits, as he went 3 for 5.

The Crosscutters are back at Bowman Field today for a two-game home series with the State College Spikes and then travel to State College on Tuesday. The Cutters aren’t back home then until Thursday, Aug. 22 against Mahoning Valley.
