College roundup: Bucknell field hockey earns PL berth

In women’s field hockey, Bucknell clinched a Patriot League tournament berth with a 6-1 win against Colgate. Kaelyn Long scored twice and had a pair of assists and Leah Fogelsanger added two goals.

This is the 12th time in Jeremy Cook’s 12 seasons as coach that the Bison have reached the tournament.

Mansfield’s Christie Buyer scored her sixth of the season in a 6-1 loss at East Stroudsburg.

The Warriors jumped out to an early 3-0 lead by the end of the first quarter and added another score in the second quarter.

• For the second time this season and third time in her career, senior Kaylee Long, a Milton grad, set the Lycoming College women’s cross country team’s program-record for fastest 6K race with a run of 23:48.7, placing ninth at the Hood College Open.

Long bested her previous program-record run of 23:57.1, set at the Lock Haven University Invitational on Sept. 21.

Katie Plankenhorn led Penn College at the Gettysburg Invitational with a time of 31:21 to take 135th and help the Wildcats finish 25th as a team.

Central Mountain grad Ellie Nesbitt and Bryn Trout led the way for Lock Haven at the Gettysburg Invitational. Nesbitt ran a 25:40.00 to take 71st overall and Trout finished in 25:45.10.  Warrior Run grad Rachel Grow and Central Mountain grad Laurel Moyer also helped the Bald Eagles.

• At the Gettysburg Invitational, Penn College finished 22nd in men’s cross country. Jonah Isaacson led the Wildcats with an 87th-place finishi in 29:12.

Warrior Run grad Hunter Confair was Lock Haven’s top finisher and was followed closely by Zach Skrabski, Brett Pope, Evan Schlosser, John Davern and Jace Kreamer. The finishes helped Lock Haven place 12th out of 28.

• First-place Navy topped second-place Bucknell, 1-0, on a Carolyn Mang overtime goal in women’s soccer.

Bucknell was under duress for much of the match, as Navy totaled 26 shots. Freshman goalkeeper Kaylee Donnelly made five saves.

Penn College defeated Cazenovia College, 2-0. Both Morgan Brooks and Tiffany Brown scored for the Wildcats to put Penn College above .500 at 7-6-1.

Lock Haven fell to Shippensburg, 3-0. The Raiders scored twice in the second half to pull away.

Mansfield lost to Bloomsburg, 5-0. Bloomsburg scored three goals in the first half as Paige Harris had a pair of goals.

• In men’s soccer, Penn College blanked Cazenovia College, 2-0. Greg Conkle and Cole King both scored first-half goals and Colton Wartman added an assist.

Andrea DiSomma and Lock Haven defeated Shippensburg, 4-2, thanks to a hat trick by DiSomma. His mark of 13 goals is tops in the conference.

Tanner Fonjweng had a header in the opening minute and Zack Donoway earned his second shutout in Lycoming’s 1-0 MAC Commonwealth win against second-place Stevenson.

• The Lock Haven women’s volleyball team fell in an afternoon contest against Pitt.-Johnstown, 3-1 (25-14, 20-25, 25-12, 25-12). Breanna McDonald led Lock Haven with 10 kills. Kristen Nealon had a team-high 28 assists.

Penn College fell to SUNY Poly, 3-0 (25-17, 25-21, 25-12). The Wildcats were led by Hannah Burnett’s 14 digs and Mackenzie Mahler’s 19 assists. Coryn Oswald added seven kills.

• Lycoming sophomore Jake Booth, freshman Katherine Brown and junior Cara Zortman each won two individual events a piece to lead the Lycoming College swimming teams in the season opener against Albright College.

The women’s team won eight of the 14 events with just seven active swimmers, but Albright used 67 points from its non-first-place finishes to upend the Warriors, 123-100. On the men’s side, Albright, which has won the last three MAC titles, won 11 of the 14 events in 159-84 win.

Mikaela Clemson won two individual events for Lock Haven at Millersville, winning both the 50 and 100 free. Clemson posted a 26.22 second time in the 50 and a 59.11 in the 100 free.
