Local roundup: Dorner wins rain-shortened match

BRETT R. CROSSLEY/Sun-Gazette Correspondent South Williamsport's Olivia Dorner competes during a No. 1 singles match against Central Columbia’s Tessa Gill on Wednesday. Dorner won, 6-0, 6-0. The No. 1 singles match was the only match to be completed as rain shortened it.

Rain shortened Central Columbia and South Williamsport’s anticipated girls tennis match Wednesday as only one contest was decided: No. 1 singles.

Defending PIAA state medalist Olivia Dorner defeated Central Columbia’s Tessa Gill, 6-0, 6-0, in the only match to be completed.

Cowanesque Valley beat North Penn-Liberty, 5-2. Sarah Boyer won at No. 1 singles for CV, 6-0, 6-0.

St. John Neumann beat Muncy, 3-2. Maria Helminiak won for the Golden Knights at No. 1 singles, 8-3.

Madison Entz rallied from a one-set deficit to win at No. 3 singles, and Hughesville won a three-setter at No. 2 doubles to beat Bloomsburg, 4-1, in girls tennis. Entz dropped the first set in her singles match, but rallied for 6-4, 6-4 wins in the second and third sets to take the win.

• In boys soccer, Sullivan County beat Muncy, 3-1. Joe Edkin tied the game off an assist by Peter Varvel in the first half to make it a 1-1 game before the Griffins scored two goals to pull away.

North Penn-Liberty scored seven first-half goals in a 12-0 win over Towanda. Caiden Alexander and Taylor Nelson both had hat tricks.

• Playing through the elements, the Lock Haven University women’s soccer team battled to a 1-1 tie against Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference foe Shepherd. The tying goal came from Marley Sprenkel.

Lycoming freshman Bella Green, a South Williamsport grad, connected on a header in the first half and sophomore Jess Riordan notched her second shutout of the season to lead Lycoming to a 1-0 victory over Penn College in the Battle for the Lumber.

• In women’s field hockey, Dana Evans scored her PSAC-leading 13th goal of the season and Brittany Ryan recorded her third shutout to lead the Mounties to a 3-0 victory in the PSAC opener at Mercyhurst on Wednesday.
