Bald Eagles defeat Nyack College in women’s basketball

LOCK HAVEN — On the heels of a pair of season-opening losses to Fairmont State (70-79) and Concord University (60-86) in the 2019 MEC/PSAC CHALLENGE held at Fairmont State, the Lock Haven women’s basketball team was hoping that a return to the confines of Thomas Field House on Saturday would result in a win for the Bald Eagles.

Making the most of the opportunity in their season home-opener, the Eagles took care of business as they downed Nyack College, 88-75.

“We have been playing very short-handed with a lot of starters out,” Lock Haven coach Jennifer Smith said. “That has been rather challenging for us and that is why it was important for us to get the first win. You play some games to find out what you need to work on and right now, we have to get a little creative playing through our injuries. We have to get some things done in a hurry because conference play is right around the corner.”

Beginning a season with injuries is nothing new to Smith either.

“I am hoping we get our injuries out the way early this year,” Smith said. “I don’t think we have had this many starters out consistently so I am telling myself that is the case so we can get our injury problems out of the way before conference play begins.”

The two teams matched each other point-for-point until the Bald Eagles tallied 11 straight for 17-8 lead. Ahnera Parker drained a 3-pointer for a 20-10 LHU lead at the first turn.

Responding to the LHU offensive assault, Nyack scored 13 unanswered to begin the second period to regain the lead, 23-20, before Bink Redman stopped the run with a free throw.

During the final six minutes of the second quarter, the Bald Eagles outscored the Warriors 15-6 to take a 35-29 lead at halftime.

Nyack began the second half with an 8-2 run to tie the game at 37-all. During the final six minutes of the third period, LHU turned up the offense to put together a 17-7 run for a 54-44 lead.

The Bald Eagles built onto their lead in the fourth. Lock Haven featured five double-digit scorers. Parker led all scorers with 28 points, while Williamsport grad Jaynelle Robinson posted a double-double with 12 points and a dozen rebounds. Completing the quintet of multiple-digit scorers were Redman with 16 points, Redman followed by Marena Lonardi with 14 points and Rileigh Devine with 11.

“We worked on that lot,” said Parker about feasting on the pass down on the block. “I was a little off in my scrimmages. We came in today at 0-2 and we knew that wasn’t where we wanted to be. We have a lot of things to work on, but we have a couple of non-conference games left to work on things before we get into the conference.”

Redman added eight boards to her 16 points and Devine had 11 points.
