Local roundup: Bucknell women defeat Bonnies

Bucknell defeated St. Bonaventure, 68-60, in women’s basketball on Wednesday. Ally Johnson led the Bison with a 17-point performance and Abby Kapp had 16 points.

Ellie Mack had a near double-double with 13 points and eight rebounds.

Penn State used a hot-shooting performance to take down defending Atlantic 10 champion Fordham, 72-59. The win marked the 950th victory in program history, making Penn State one of only 20 Division I schools to have tallied at least 950 wins.

Senior Siyeh Frazier led the way with her second career double-double thanks to a career-high 19 points and 10 rebounds.

• In men’s basketball, Bucknell defeated Hofstra, 86-71. Jimmy Sotos had a huge game for the Bison with 24 points and John Meeks came up just shy of a double-double with 14 points and seven rebounds.

Walter Ellis and Andrew Funk both had 12 points each for Bucknell. The Bison led, 38-32, at halftime, and got an impressive 36 points from their bench. Paul Newman led the Bison with 14 rebounds.

Trevor English recorded his first career double-double, finishing with 23 points, 17 rebounds and six assists to lead Mansfield, but Frostburg State University used a late second-half run to escape Decker Gymnasium with an 85-77 non-conference victory.

English led the game in rebounding and was tied for the high in assists while going 5 of 7 from the foul line. Christian Simmons continued his red-hot start to the season, finishing with 18 points and 11 rebounds, marking his first double-double of the year.

• Rookie standout Andrea DiSomma of the Lock Haven University men’s soccer team earned 2019 All-PSAC East first-team honors and was one of four players to earn All-Conference accolades. Along with DiSomma’s first-team selection at forward, the trio of Ivo Klaric, Brian Flatter and Kemali Green were named to the second team.
