Local roundup: Lycoming men’s soccer falls to Messiah in MACs

Despite outshooting eighth-ranked Messiah College and posting 10 shots on goal, the Lycoming College men’s soccer team fell, 2-1, in the MAC Commonwealth Championship on Saturday.

The Warriors finished the 2019 season with a 13-7 overall record under coach Nate Gibboney, as the team played in the conference final for the sixth time in the past seven years.

• In women’s soccer, Penn College fell to Penn State Berks, 6-0, in the NEAC semifinals to end the year 10-9-1. Penn College was held to just four shots on goal.

Lock Haven closed its season with a thrilling 2-1 win over Mansfield. LHU’s goals both came in the first half. Josie Swartz and Kelsey Brown both scored for LHU.

• Newcomers Trevor English and Christian Simmons both scored in double figures in their Mansfield men’s basketball debut, but the Mounties ran into a high-powered No. 4 West Liberty offense, falling 129-79.

English poured in a team-high 22 points on 9 of 13 shooting from the field and added nine rebounds. Simmons netted 19 points and grabbed five boards while drilling 7 of 8 shots at the foul line.

• In women’s basketball, Paige Whitfield scored a team-high 19 points and Kira Merritt netted four 3-pointers to lead Mansfield, but a late fourth-quarter run allowed West Virginia Wesleyan College to win at the IUP Tournament, 71-61.

Bucknell cruised to a 71-37 win against Monmouth. Abby Kapp led the Bison with 13 points and Ally Johnson and Ellie Mack both added 12 points.

Lock Haven closed the 2019 MEC/PSAC Challenge with an 86-60 loss to Concord University. Rileigh Devine and Marena Lonardi led Lock Haven’s offense, recording 13 points and a steal each, and bringing in three and four rebounds respectively. Freshman Jaynelle Robinson, a Williamsport grad, collected eight rebounds, once again leading the Bald Eagles, while tallying nine points.

• The Lock Haven University swimming team competed at home against California and lost, 151-93. Highlighting the meet for the Bald Eagles was Kristin Allen, who won the 200 fly with a PSAC qualifying time of 2:17.75. Allen also took first place in the 200 back with her season best time of 2:20.14.

Junior Dominick Berardelli, a Montoursville grad, led the Lycoming College swim teams with a pair of wins in the backstroke, as Lycoming won five individual events in a double dual with Hood and Misericordia.

The Warriors fell to Misericordia, 142-93, and Hood, 123-108 on the men’s side and 142-93 to Misericordia and 147-86 to Hood on the women’s side.

Junior Mikayla Wright won the only match of the day for the Warriors, taking the 1,000 free in 11:59.67.

• Aaron Pfeil turned in an impressive second place finish and was one of three All-Region performers for the Lock Haven University men’s cross country team at the NCAA Division II Atlantic Region Championships. Luke Vanderhoff and John Davern also earned All-Region honors.

Central Mountain grad Laurel Moyer (third, 21:39.80) and Cadie Kiser (sixth, 21:45.50) turned in a historic performance for the Lock Haven women as both ran to All-Region status.

Quincy Amabile earned a top-25 finish to lead the Mansfield University men’s and women’s cross country teams. Amabile finished the men’s 10K race in 32:29.50, placing 20th out of a field of 134 runners. Lyndsey Payne paced the Mountaineer women with a run of 23:38.60

• In women’s volleyball, Lock Haven lost to Shpeherd, 3-0 (25-17, 25-21, 25-13). Kristen Nealon had 19 assists for Lock Haven and Cassidy Hoover added 19 digs.

• Penn College had its highest team finish with a fifth-place showing at the Ned McGinley Invitational at King’s in college wrestling. Dylan Gettys (165 pounds), Dan Bergeron (174), David Gallaso (184) and Jared Mooney (197) all reached the semifinals.

Senior 174-pounder Hadyn Swartwood, a Jersey Shore grad, won his weight class to highlight a group of six Lycoming College wrestlers to place at the Washington & Jefferson Invitational.

Junior 125-pounder Shane Casey, freshman 157-pounder Paul Santomarco and senior 197-pounder Brody Keefe placed fourth. Freshman 133-pounder Sam Hanley and freshman 197-pounder Michael Kustanbauter, a Muncy grad, took fifth.
