College roundup: Lycoming’s McFadden records 1,000th career point

Lycoming senior Akilah McFadden, a Lewisburg grad, set a milestone in Lycoming’s 64-60 win against Stevenson by reaching 1,000 career points Saturday afternoon.

McFadden reached the mark in the first half to become the 11th player in program history to be a 1,000-point scorer.

Freshman Jasmine Hilton led Mansfield with 10 points and six rebounds against 13th-ranked Indiana (Pa.), but last season’s PSAC champion proved too much for the Mountaineers who fell, 71-38.

Penn College fell to SUNY Cobleskill, 70-60, on the road. Madison Klock and Tori Wolfe each had a team-high 12 points and Lydia Albert added ten. Ja’Quela Dyer recorded a double-double with 11 points and ten rebounds.

• In men’s basketball, Bucknell defeated Albany, 65-64. Jimmy Sotos led the Bison with 23 points and Avi Toomer added 21. Bucknell rallied back from an eight-point first-half deficit.

Junior D’Yante Doughty posted 16 points, 10 rebounds and five assists to lead Lycoming, but a hot-shooting effort from 3-point range in the second half from Norman Hughes helped lift Stevenson to a 73-67 MAC Commonwealth win.

SUNY Cobleskill defeated Penn College, 100-77. The Wildcats (2-6) were led by a trio of double-digit scorers in Carson Garvis (18 points), Elijah Vazquez (16) and Brody Baker (10). Garvis had 10 rebounds as well for a double-double. Loyalsock grad Ben Sosa chipped in eight points, 10 rebounds and a team-high six assists.

Senior Tyler Moffe drilled a 3 to tie the game at 61 with 4 minutes, 10 seconds remaining, but sixth-ranked Indiana (Pa.) closed out the game on a 15-2 run to earn a 76-63 PSAC victory.

• At the Petrofes Invitational at Messiah, Penn College’s wrestling team finished 13th. Ryan Stilgenbauer went 3-2 and was a win away from securing a top 8 finish for the Wildcats at 125 pounds. At 133, Ryan Bauer also went 3-2.

The No. 25 Lock Haven University wrestling team sent a small unattached contingent to the Patriot Open hosted by George Mason, and it was Jonathan Ross who led the way for the Bald Eagles. Ross was 4-2 and placed sixth at 157 pounds. He had one tech fall and a pin on the day.

Senior 174-pounder Hadyn Swartwood, a Jersey Shore grad, and sophomore heavyweight Nick Winfield each reached their championship match to lead a group of nine Lycoming College wrestlers to place and help the team finish fourth at the Ohio Northern University Invitational. Freshmen 165-pounder Hunter O’Connor, a Jersey Shore grad, and 184-pounder Gable Crebs, a Montoursville grad, each finished fourth.

• Sophomore Jake Booth, junior Cara Zortman and freshman Katherine Brown each won two individual events to lead the Lycoming College swimming teams, but Wilkes was able to post a 96-89 victory on the women’s side and a 124-71 win on the men’s side.

Lycoming won five of the 11 races, with Zortman and Brown factoring in all of the wins. Zortman won the 50-yard freestyle in 25.61 and also easily won the 100-yard freestyle in 56.93.

Booth led the men’s side with wins in the 200-yard individual medley in 2:06.99 and the 100-yard backstroke in 57.27. Senior Will Gillespie won the 1,000-yard freestyle in 11:24.24 and junior Brandon Vought posted a time of 5:12.88 to win the 500-yard freestyle.

Lewisburg grad Collin Hummel picked up his NCAA time in the preliminary race of the 50 free in 20.63 at the Zippy Invitational with Bloomsburg University’s men’s swimming team at Akron.

Lauren Mummert posted the best Lock Haven finish at the Wooster Invitational by placing ninth and recording another PSAC qualifier for the Bald Eagles with a time of 19:02.65 in the 1,650-yard freestyle.

• The Lock Haven University women’s indoor track and field team opened the 2019-20 indoor season at the two-day Bucknell Bison Opener and performed well.

Leading the way was the trio of Arianna Moyer, Karina Long and Riyana Owens, as it combined for several PSAC championship qualifying marks.

Long recorded a PSAC mark in the long jump with a mark of 17-01.50. She returned in the triple jump and picked up her second PSAC championship qualifying mark.

Freshman Henery Polanco ran the fastest freshman time in program-history with a time of 7.17 in the 60 meter dash to highlight a Mansfield men’s and women’s track and field team that had five athletes hit a qualifying mark at the Bucknell Bison Opener.

South Williamsport grad Katie Jones tied for first in the pole vault with a height of 3.95 meters for Penn State.
