Bald Eagles fall at home to WCU in women’s basketball

LOCK HAVEN — After experiencing a hiccup that resulted in a loss to Shepherd the last time out, the Lock Haven University women’s basketball team returned to the friendly confines of the Thomas Field House to face West Chester on Wednesday night.

Hoping for a better outcome at home didn’t happen as the Bald Eagles dropped a 76-69 game to the Rams.

“If we don’t have people step up who want to play the game, we are going to keep losing,” said a disgruntled LHU coach Jennifer Smith. “Everybody has to do their job. That is all it is. One time down the floor they do their job and the next time they get scared and they are afraid to finish the game. I need to find five kids who can finish a basketball game.”

The two teams combined for 40 points in the opening quarter with West Chester holding a 22-18 lead at the first turn.

After falling behind by eight points three minutes into the second period. The Bald Eagles battled and scrapped their way back to take a 39-36 lead at halftime. Rileigh Devine led the Bald Eagles during the first half with 16 points.

Leading by three at halftime, LHU built its lead to as many as eight during the third quarter before settling for a 55-51 lead at the turn for home.

Not to run away and hide, the Golden Rams tied the score at 57-all less than two minutes into the final period before running the final to West Chester 76, LHU 69.

Marena Lonardi led the Eagles with 19 points, Devine one digit behind Lonardi with 18.

For West Chester, Alexis Anderson came off the bench to lead all scorers in the game with 25 points.
