Local roundup: Penn State women fall to Rutgers

STATE COLLEGE — Penn State put up a tough fight against Big Ten-leading Rutgers, but the Scarlet Knights went on a late run to defeat the Nittany Lions, 62-57, Thursday at the Bryce Jordan Center.

Senior Siyeh Frazier led three Lady Lions in double figures with 14 points. Junior Kamaria McDaniel scored 11, while classmate Alisia Smith added 10.

Penn State held Rutgers to their second-lowest field goal percentage in a game against a Big Ten team this season at 37.5%. The Nittany Lions also held the Big Ten’s leading scorer in Arella Guirantes to 10 points, her lowest scoring effort of the season. She avearaged 19.7 points per game entering Thursday’s game.

“We talked in the locker room about how being that close doesn’t cut it. We’re getting there, we’re getting better, but at the end of the day we have to approach these games with some confidence that we can get the W,” Penn State coach Carolyn Kieger said.

Penn State is now 7-10 and 1-5 in the Big Ten.

“I’m proud of the progress we’ve made this year, but now we have to expect to win, and not play to not lose. We have to come in the gam ready to take some of these Ws because we can play,” Kieger said. “Rutgers is at the top fo the league and I thought we played them pretty well on the defensive end, but we have to have a little bit more confidence and a little bit more grit and come away with some big plays at the end.”
