Local roundup: Welch grabs 500th board for NPM

In girls basketball, Lizzi Welch had a double-double of 12 points and 10 rebounds and in the process grabbed her 500th career rebound in North Penn-Mansfield’s 62-24 win over Sayre on Friday.

JoAnne McNamara had a 15-point, 10-assist double-double. Emma Palmer scored 13 points and Jaime Palmer added 10 points.

Mansfield held a 10-point lead after the first quarter and went into the half up, 37-11.

Jessica King posted another double-double — 22 points and 10 rebounds – and had six blocks, four steals, four tips and two assists to help Sullivan County cruise to a 56-22 win against Bucktail. Sophia Springman added 16 points and had a near double-double with eight points.

Cara Parsell scored 16 points and grabbed a team-high 10 rebounds to help Galeton defeat Oswayo Valley, 45-34. She added five assists and two steals. Lauren Sauley added nine rebounds.

The Tigers held Oswayo Valley to single digits in each of the first three quarters.

Jade Cordrey scored 12 points and Olivia Strother added 11, but it wasn’t enough as Hughesville fell at home to Southern Columbia, 41-36.

The Spartans (9-7) held Southern Columbia to just two points in the first quarter.

Northeast Bradford defeated North Penn-Liberty in a rout, 75-14. Liberty trailed by 28 points after the first quarter and was held to single digits all four quarters.

Eva Rice led Liberty with six points.

Cathryn Brought scored 22 points to lead Wellsboro, but the Green Hornets fell to Athens, 49-38.

Wellsboro held a 4-point lead after the first quarter, but only managed to score in single digits the final three.

Montgomery beat CMVT, 47-27. Riley Fry led the Red Raiders (8-7) with 14 points and Nita Imeri chipped in 11.

Aleaha Bigelow scored 17 points, but Muncy fell on the road at Benton in a close Mid-Penn game, 40-35. Bell Hitesman grabbed 10 rebounds for the Indians.

Hope Drumm scored 13 points and Sophie Kilbride and Jamie Fedorjaka both added 10 in Lewisburg’s 50-26 win over Midd-West.

• Central Columbia rode a 10-point advantage in the second quarter to a 61-58 win over Hughesville in boys basketball. Dylan Bieber scored a team-high 17 points, thanks to four 3-pointers. Blake Sherwood added 11 for Hughesville, as did

Sullivan County pulled away from CMVT with a 16-point advantage in the fourth quarter in a 67-33 win. Justin Metzger hit a trio of 3-pointers as he scored 16 points. Alex Schweitzer scored 11 points for the Griffins.

• Junior Lindsey Payne finished in the top spot in the mile run at the Houghton Highlander Invitational to highlight a stellar afternoon for Mansfield’s women’s track and field team.

Payne ran a 5:23.45 mile time to take the top spot and collected a PR in the 800 finishing in third place with a time of 2:32.75.

In the pole vault, freshman Riley Mong, a Warrior Run grad, finished second. She matched her season’s best vault at 3.20 meters.

South Williamsport grad Katie Jones set a season-best mark in the pole vault for Penn State at the Dr. Sander Invitational and Rod McCravy Memorial in New York. Jones cleared 13 feet, 3 1/2 inches to place second in the event.

A night after scoring her 1,000th point, Summer McNulty scored a game-high 15 to lead Loyalsock to a 46-35 win over South Williamsport. The Lancers cruised in the second half after opening a 26-15 lead at halftime. Claudia Green led South with 12 points, and Hailey Neidig added 11.
