Lock Haven falls to 10-8 after loss to Red Raiders

LOCK HAVEN — On paper, it looked like a tough task for the Lock Haven women’s basketball team Saturday when the Bald Eagles welcomed Shippensburg to the Thomas Field House.

It proved to be just that for the Bald Eagles as Shippensburg prevailed, 71-60, in a fast-paced game.

“We fell apart in the fourth quarter when everything mattered,” said LHU coach Jennifer Smith. “The game plan we had was successful. We just didn’t execute it for 40 minutes. We started the game disengaged with nine turnovers, but the bottom line is that we had several players who didn’t show up ready to play today.”

One notable number on the final stat sheet was three points for Rileigh Devine, who came in averaging 13.5 points per game.

“They played her tough. They played her physical,” said Smith. “She has to figure out how to get looks when they are chasing her all over the floor.”

LHU went up 4-0 in the first minute, but Shippensburg came back with a 10-2 run en route to a 15-14 lead at the first turn.

Continuing to play at a fast pace, the two teams played through four lead changes until LHU took a 33-31 lead at halftime.

Ties and lead changes were again the name of the game in the third quarter until Arial Jones drained a 32-foot Hail Mary shot to give the Raiders a 51-47 lead at the turn for home.

Continuing to battle for the final quarter, the Mountain was simply too high for the Bald Eagles to climb as they fell at the final buzzer.

Despite the loss, Lock Haven had three players reach double figures in the score book as Marena Lonardi led the way with 21 followed by Taylor Leidy with 17 and Ahnera Parker with 14. Janelle Robinson led the Bald Eagles with 11 boards.

For Shippensburg, Jones led all scorers in the game with 24 points.
