No. 19 Army West Point beats LHU

LOCK HAVEN — The stage was set at Thomas Field House for the Armed Forces Appreciation Night meeting between Lock Haven and Army West Point.

After the 10 bouts were contested, the Cadets prevailed, 26-9, before a packed house at Lock Haven.

Lock Haven broke out on top 9-0 with wins in the first three bouts.

Luke Werner decisioned Trey Chalifoux, 7-0 at 125 pounds; D.J. Fehlman was a 7-1 winner over Lane Peters at 133 and Kyle Shoop was pushed to the limit before downing Corey Shie 9-7 in overtime.

Army flexed its muscles in the final two bouts prior to intermission when P.G. Ogunanya doubled up on Brock Port for a 6-3 win at 149 and Markus Hartman sent the meet to halftime with a 10-0 major decision over Alex Klucker at 157.

With the wins by Ogunsanya and Hartman, the LHU lead was cut to just two points at 9-7.

Turning to second half of the dual, it was all Army as West Point swept all five bouts for the 26-9 win.

Going into the meet, LHU coach Scott Moore knew that his wrestlers had to make hay in the lower weights, and then hope for an upset or two in the final five bouts.

“We knew coming in that we were favored in the first three weights and that we had to score some bonus points,” said Moore. “Those guys wrestled well and Shoop didn’t wrestle the match he wanted to, but he wrestled well enough to find a way to win in overtime and a win is a win. Luke Werner continues to wrestle well and he beat a kid that actually beat him last year and stole the spot to go to nationals and D.J. Fehlman, the same thing.

“If you win the first three you give yourself a chance later on. A lot of teams are getting us into scrambles and they did to us tonight. You have to win scrambles. But overall, I thought the whole way through the lineup the kids battled and wrestled well, but the bottom line is that you have to get a takedown.”
