College roundup: LHU women clinch PSAC tournament berth

The Lock Haven women’s basketball team downed West Chester, 71-60, Saturday afternoon to clinch a playoff spot in the PSAC playoffs. It’s the Bald Eagles second consecutive appearance in the PSAC tournament.

The two teams battled hard from the start, exchanging the lead back and forth in the early minutes of the first quarter before the Bald Eagles took over permanently, extending their lead to 19-14 as the period came to a close.

It was a team effort for the Bald Eagles as five different players recorded in the double digits. Freshman Marena Lonardi led Lock Haven with 17 points.

Taylor Leidy added 13 points, going 4 for 6 from the field, while Bink Redman recorded 12 points to mark her third consecutive game in the double-digits.

Penn College ended the season on a high note with a 71-43 win over Wells College in an NEAC contest. The Wildcats end the year 7-17 overall and 6-10 in the conference.

Montoursville Lydia Albert led Penn College off the bench with 17 points. Loyalsock grad Cassi Kuhns had a near double-double of 15 points and nine rebounds, as did Tori Wolfe (10 points, 9 rebounds).

Ja’Quela Dyer led Penn College with 10 rebounds.

Freshman Jasmine Perez scored 10 points and forced a game-high five steals to help Mansfield lead heading into the final quarter, but Kutztown won the fourth to earn a 61-47 PSAC victory.

Hilton opened the fourth quarter with a jumper to extend the Mounties’ lead to 46-43. However, the Golden Bears responded with an 16-0 run over the following four minutes to lead 59-46.

• The Lock Haven men’s basketball team fell to West Chester, 98-83, in PSAC Eastern Division game.

Christian Kelly continued his fine form and paced the Bald Eagles with 26 points on the day. Kelly went 8 for 15 from the field and grabbed six rebounds.

Senior Reilly Collins scored a career-high 23 points to lead, but Kutztown overcame a first-half deficit to escape Decker Gymnasium with an 85-76 PSAC East victory. Collins was 9 of 14 from the field and 4 of 5 from three on his career afternoon to lead the Mounties.

Penn College fell to Wells College in a close NEAC contest, 84-80, in a tuneup before the conference playoffs start this week.

Loyalsock grad Ben Sosa had a team-high 23 points and Elijah Vazquez scored 22. Carson Garvis added 13. The Wildcats held a slim lead at the half, 38-36.

• In college baseball, Penn College dropped both games of a season-opening doubleheader at Stockton, 9-4 and 5-2. In the first game, Jacob Carles, Jake Wagner, Brittan Kittle and Ethan Ketterman all had two hits each.

Sophomore Brittain Shander registered his fourth multi-hit game of the season and three Mansfield players drove in runs, but Concord University scored the game-winning runs in the sixth and held on for a 6-4 non-conference victory in Glenville, West Virginia.

• Sophomore Hannah Swartz hit her first career home run and junior Joelle Snyder knocked in the game-tying run and scored the game-winning run to lead the Mansfield softball team to a 4-3 non-conference victory over West Virginia Wesleyan College in the first game of a doubleheader. The Mounties lost the second game, 5-0, to the University of Charleston.

• Using a six-goal advantage in the first quarter and a hat trick from freshman Rory Hines, the Lycoming College men’s lacrosse team held off a late rally from Washington & Jefferson for a 10-9 win. Sophomores Michael Scarponi scored two goals and Blake Premo added two assists for the Warriors.

• It was a tale of two halves as the Bucknell women’s lacrosse team pumped in 10 first-half goals, but La Salle held the Bison to just one more in the second half and rallied for a 12-11 victory.

Senior Hailey Kimble scored four goals and sophomore Emma Lehr gained five draw controls, but Lycoming fell on the road to Shenandoah, 24-5. Kimble’s four goals moved her within four of Casey Maguire (2012-15) for 12th in school history.
