High school roundup: Sock’s Gair records 1,000th point in win

Aiden Gair is putting together a big senior year and he added another lasting memory Saturday night against Central Columbia, scoring his 1,000th career points and helping Loyalsock defeat the visiting Blue Jays, 57-43, in a showdown between District 4 Class AAA’s current top-seeded teams.

Gair needed 13 points to reach 1,000 and joined that club in the third quarter en route to finishing with 19 points. Rees Watkins added 17 points as Loyalsock (18-0, 9-0 HAC-II) continued the program’s best start of the 2000s.

Hughesville handed Mount Carmel its first HAC-III loss, avenging a previous defeat and downing the Tornadoes, 68-60. Blake Sherwood recorded his second double-double in three games, scoring 19 points and grabbing 10 rebounds. Clayton Poust scored 16 points and Justus Leighow added six assists. Drew Bieber scored 12 points off the bench as Hughesville improved to 15-4.

Davion Hill continued his big week, scoring a game-high 29 points as St. John Neumann clinched a share of the Mid-Penn championship and defeated CMVT, 58-23. The Knights (16-2, 12-0) can win the title outright if they win at least one of their final two league games. Neumann plays at Montoursville on Monday night.

James Evans-McQuay scored 16 points and the lead changed hands five times in the first quarter, but Williamsport was unable to rally from a halftime deficit and lost 68-61 at Northeastern. Nassir Jones added 15 points for the Millionaires while Ahmir Ellzy scored 11. Williamsport hosts Susquehanna Township Friday.

Justin Metzger scored 14 points and four Griffins reached double figures as Sullivan County erased a 11-point deficit and rallied for a hard-fought 55-50 win at Muncy. The Griffins improved to 15-4 and a young Muncy team took a good step forward after losing by 21 in Laporte last Monday. Conner Sassano scored 16 points and Branson Eyer had 13 points and 19 rebounds. Ross Eyer and Gio Persun both grabbed 10 rebounds.

Canton went on the road and earned a quality win at Northeast Bradford, defeating the Panthers, 53-46. Sophomore Isaiah Niemczyk scored a game-high 19 points and helped the Warriors (10-9) rally from a five-point second-quarter deficit. Ben Knapp and Zach Rentzel each scored 10 points for Canton.

Playing its fourth game in four nights, Jersey Shore ran out of gas at HAC-I leading Danville as the Ironmen won, 84-50. Damian Wililams and Tanner Lorson each had nine points with Williams adding seven rebounds. Nate Ewing produced eight points, five rebounds and five assists.

Lewisburg had three players reach career-highs in points as it won its fifth straight game and defeated Milton, 74-58. Forrest Zelechoski led the way with 17 points, freshman Cam Michaels scored 16 and Dante Sims added 13 for the Green Dragons (14-5). Ceaser Allen scored a career-high 30 points for Lewisburg.

Montoursville beat Midd-West in a rout, 71-38. Hunter Shearer scored 15 points, all coming from 3-pointers. The Warriors also got double-digit scores from Jake Simms (11), Peyton Mussina (10) and Zach Mallery (10).

• The South Williamsport girls basketball team earned a quality win over 14-win Minersville, defeating the Miners, 59-30, as three players scored in double figures. Sophomore forward Claudia Green scored a career-high 18 points and Haley Neidig added 17. Julie Anthony scored 10 points and South (10-9) increased its chances of hosting a first-round playoff game.

Sophia Erb scored 10 points, but Williamsport was outscored by 23 in the third quarter and lost 72-44 at North Schuylkill. Whitney Felix scored eight points for the Millionaires and Katelyn Wilson added seven.

Alli Macensky scored seven points and grabbed eight rebounds in Galeton’s 68-22 loss at Otto-Eldred. Cara Parsell added seven rebounds.
