LHU defeats Edinboro in wrestling

LOCK HAVEN – Lock Haven University Wrestling took care of Mid-American Conference opponent Edinboro Thursday night in a 25-13 dual meet victory. The Bald Eagles were powered by a pin from senior Jared Siegrist at 174 pounds, and first-period technical falls from redshirt-senior Kyle Shoop (141) and junior Luke Werner (125).

The win moves LHU to 7-5 (3-2 MAC East)

Prior to last season, Edinboro had beaten LHU in 16 consecutive dual meets. Lock Haven blew by a rebuilding Fighting Scots team, 30-10, last season on the road and did the same thing Thursday inside the home confines of the Thomas Fieldhouse.

“In matches like this, you have to win the close ones and score bonus points,” Lock Haven coach Scott Moore said. “I’m proud of the way they fought. Got some gutsy wins. And got a good team win going into (Friday’s) competition.”

The dual meet began at 285 pounds as Lock Haven sent out senior Trey Hartsock to battle nationally-ranked Jon Spaulding. While Edinboro’s No. 25 heavyweight secured a 9-3 win by decision, Hartsock battled hard to avoid giving up bonus points to one of the most formidable heavyweights in the MAC.

LHU’s strength as a team is its lighter weights, and that was no different in this matchup. No. 15 Werner cruised past Edinboro’s Lucas Rodriguez, as he secured an 18-0 tech fall in 1:13.

“Going into the match I knew that I could get bonus points on my opponent,” Werner said. “My coaches were telling me that it would be a big swing for us if you guys could go out there and get some bonus points. I knew that if I got out there, got to my attacks right away, and got to my offense, that would be it.”

The reigning MAC East Wrestler of the Week, DJ Fehlman, stretched his individual winning streak to eight in what was a 7-2 decision over talented true freshman Tye Varndell of Edinboro at 133 pounds. No. 28 Fehlman was ranked second in the most recent MAC rankings, while Varndell was slotted in fifth.

Shoop gave LHU a third straight victory in his 16-0 tech fall over Richie Gomez at 141 pounds. The reigning All-American and two-time national leader in technical falls, notched the win in just 1:45.

Edinboro momentarily stopped the bleeding with a victory at 149 pounds. Redshirt-junior Tyler Vath outlasted Lock Haven’s redshirt-sophomore Brock Port in a 6-1 decision. The Bellefonte native hung with Vath for a majority of the match, but gave up a late takedown after the bout was all but secured in the waning seconds. This result put the score at 13-6 Lock Haven at the halfway point.

The middle and upper weights have given Lock Haven mixed results in the dual meet setting this year. With returning national qualifiers Alex Klucker and Corey Hazel battling injuries in the second half of the season,
