Local roundup: Canton rallies to top NEB in D4 AA boys hoops

Canton rallied from a 10-point fourth-quarter deficit and reached the district semifinals for just the fourth time in program history Wednesday, surging past Northeast Bradford, 52-47, in a District 4 Class AA quarterfinal overtime thriller. The Warriors (13-10) trailed by as many as 12 in the third quarter and outscored NEB on its home court, 22-7, over the final 12 minutes. The Warriors (13-10) will play top-seeded Wyalusing on Saturday at Troy in the semifinals.

Senior Zach Rentzel scored a game-high 14 points for Canton and Isaiah Niemczyk added 13 points and five rebounds. Cooper Kitchen scored 12 points and pulled down five rebounds with Ben Knapp adding a team-high nine rebounds. The Warriors have made a four-win improvement this season and are a victory from reaching both the first district final and state tournament in program history.

South Williamsport tried its best to join Canton in the semifinals and had top-seeded Wyalusing on the ropes in the second half, but lost 44-33 in another quarterfinal. The Mounties were the last team in the field, clinching a spot Saturday, and pulled within two points with five minutes remaining in the fourth quarter. Poor foul shooting, however, doomed the Mounties who went 4 for 16 at the line. Ethan Laudenslager closed out a super senior season with a team-high 15 points and Lee Habalar added seven. The Mounties return the majority of their players next season.

The District 4 Class A and AA semifinals all will be played Saturday, the district announced last night.

The Class A boys semifinals feature Sullivan County playing St. John Neumann at Montoursville at 1:30 p.m. and Northumberland Christian playing North Penn-Liberty in Troy at 8:30 p.m. Canton plays Wyalusing in one AA semifinal at Troy at 5 p.m. and Sayre plays Bloomsburg in the other at Montoursville at 3 p.m.

The Class A girls semifinals start at noon in Montoursville when Millville faces Sullivan County. Northumberland Christian plays Northeast Bradford in the other semifinal at Troy at 6:30 p.m.

Both Class AA girls semifinals are at Milton, starting at noon when South Williamsport plays Southern Columbia. Muncy meets Mount Carmel in the other semifinal at 1:30 p.m.
