Local roundup: South boys clinch No. 8 spot in D4 AA playoffs with victory

South Williamsport defeated CMVT, 54-21, to clinch a District 4 Class AA playoff berth in boys basketball.

Ethan Laudenslauger had a 20-point, 12-rebound double-double for the Mounties.

• At the Williamsport Coaches Diving Invite on Saturday, plenty of local swimmers competed with success.

Lewisburg’s Kassie McTammany took second in the girls competition with a score of 328.65 and teammate Lucy Gustafson was seventh (236.40). Williamsport’s Lydia Missigman (266.15) and Mia Jones (261.85) were fifth and sixth, respectively.

On the boys side, Williamsport’s Jack Beattie finished second with a score of 421.95. Lewisburg’s Hunter Grimes (381.65) and Caleb Leaman (381.15) were third and fourth, respectively.

• In girls basketball, Katelyn Wilson scored 16 and Kailee Helmrich added 14, but it wasn’t enough as Williamsport lost its regular-season finale to Hollidaysburg, 61-56.

Hollidaysburg was led by Marin Miller’s 33 points.

• The Lock Haven women’s basketball team fell to Shippensburg, 64-72, in a PSAC East matchup.

Rileigh Devine led the Bald Eagles with 16 points, her fourth consecutive game finishing in double digits. Marena Lonardi had 11 points with a career-high four steals.

Seniors Morgan Mader and Akilah McFadden had 14 and 13 points, respectively, to lead Lycoming, which fell to 15th-ranked Albright, 82-59.

Mader became the first MAC Commonwealth player to hit 45 treys in a conference season in six years.

Penn College lost a home contest to SUNY Poly, 71-53. Madison Klock led Penn College with 12 points and was the only Wildcat in double figures. Tori Wolfe had an impressive 16 rebounds for Penn College.

Penn College honored Wolfe prior to the game during a senior day ceremony.

Junior Paige Whitfield secured her second double-double of the season, but Millersville defeated Mansfield, 62-48.

Whitfield led the way for the Mountaineers with 11 points, five steals while bringing down 12 rebounds, a career-high from the junior. Freshman Alivia Paeglow tied her career high in points with 11 points on the road.

• In men’s basketball, Lock Haven upset No. 24 Shippensburg in double overtime, 104-103, in a PSAC East thriller.

The Bald Eagles had five players in double figures, led by Eli Washington (20 points), Jesse McPherson (19), Christian Kelly (18), Trevor Lecuona (17) and Matt Cerruti (16).

Freshman Dyson Harward led Lycoming with 20 points and seven rebounds and junior Darius Dangerfield added 18 points, four assists and two steals, but a hot-shooting first half from Albright College helped it to a 75-57 MAC Commonwealth win.

Freshman Tobias Walden Jr. posted six points and three rebounds and senior Ryan Hollis finished with five points, as Lycoming was limited to just 34% from the floor.

Penn College fell to SUNY Poly, 91-82. Carson Garvis led Penn College with 22 points and eight rebounds and Loyalsock grad Ben Sosa scored 21.

“That was a fantastic game played by both teams. We give SUNY Poly the credit for getting the win, but it was a high level college basketball game by both squads,” Penn College coach Geoff Hensley said. “When two teams each shoot 50% from the floor and take care of the basketball, it was a fun game to be a part of.”

• With five bonus-point wins, Lycoming wrestling team closed out its dual meet season with a 36-7 win over Wesleyan University.

Lycoming got the benefit of two pins, with senior Joe Santomarco planting Dario Molina in the second period at 149 pounds and sophomore Connor Fulmer dropping Harrison Karp in the first period to cap the match at heavyweight.

Junior Ethan Landis, a Canton grad, won by disqualification at 141, freshman Gable Crebs, a Montoursville grad, added an 8-0 major decision win over Duncan Kreutter at 184 and in his first action of the year, senior Travis Ogden posted a 21-2 technical fall of Pablo Sanchez at 197.

• Sophomore Justin Joseph won 15 of 19 faceoffs and junior Dominick Massaro led the offense with three goals and two assists, as the Lycoming men’s lacrosse team came back from a two-goal first quarter deficit to post an 11-7 win over rival Susquehanna in the Battle of the Bucket.

• Lock Haven defeated Southern Connecticut State, 6-3, before falling to Seton Hill, 7-5, in college softball at the Freeze Out Tournament in Myrtle Beach, S.C.

Casey Carpenter had a home run in both games for the Bald Eagles.

• In college baseball, Mansfield senior Brady Mengel hit a home run and Mansfield belted out 11 hits, but Le Moyne College rallied late to defeat the Mounties, 8-7, in 11 innings in Cary, N.C.

Brittain Shander (2 for 6, double), Mengel (2 for 5, home run) and Ben Osborne (3 for 6) each drove in a pair of runs. Josh Kulina had a triple.

• Freshman Katherine Brown took second in the 100-yard breaststroke with a 1:06.14 to highlight Lycoming’s swimming team’s third day at the Middle Atlantic Conference Championships.

Brown posted the second-fastest time in program history, just behind Stacy Flick’s school-record of 1:05.43 set in 2011, as she had a split of 31.15 in the first 50 and 34.99 in the second 50, both second only to race winner Grace Nikolski of Misericordia (1:04.27), a three-time MAC champion.
