District 4 wrestling chair Campbell resigns
Dave Campbell recently resigned his posts on both the District 4 committee and as the District 4 wrestling chairman, he confirmed Tuesday night. Jim Zack also resigned at the District 4 committee president in a meeting held on June 29.
Zack has been replaced by Chris Venna, the District 4 basketball and competitive spirit chairman. No replacement has been named for Campbell. That person will be selected by Venna.
“For professional reasons I decided to step down,” said Campbell, who coached as South Williamsport from 1988 through 2000. “I feel that it’s in the best interest of the Line Mountain School District that I step away.”
Campbell, who is the superintendent of the Line Mountain School District, began coaching at South Williamsport as an assistant under Dave Fortin in 1988. He took over as coach in 1994. In his six years as coach of the Mounties, he guided six wrestlers to the state tournament, including a pair of state medals for Frank Noviello.
“I’ll miss the cameraderie. The loyalty of the wrestling world made this a very difficult decision to make. I think wrestling is a pretty tight fraternity.”
Campbell announced his decision to District 4 coaches in an email on June 30.
“It has been a pleasure and honor to serve such a dedicated group of coaches in such a great and successful sport,” Campbell wrote in his email. “I’m forever grateful for your trust, support, and cameraderie during my service on the wrestling committee and most recently as your chairman. I will very much miss our discussions regarding the betterment of District IV wrestling.”
Zack recently retired from his position as the President of the PIAA Board of Directors. District 2’s Frank Majikes will replace Zack on the baord of directors.
