Golf tip of the week: Grip the club softly for crisp shots

PHOTO PROVIDED Allow the hands to just hang down at the address position and maintain soft arms throughout the swing.

The one thing that upsets me as a golf instructor is seeing golfers hold the club with a death grip. Tension destroys a lot of swings that otherwise would be productive. Think how difficult it would be to throw a baseball with a tight grip.

Believe it or not, if the hands and arms are relaxed, the club will orbit the body and maintain its natural orbit while increasing clubhead speed by 10 to 20 miles per hour. It’s similar to swinging a string with a weight to the other end.

Don’t forget to enjoy this great game called golf.
