Dowell’s PK with 76 seconds left gives Loyalsock exciting 2-1 win against Williamsport in boys soccer
Time was ticking away and both Williamsport and Loyalsock were hoping to get that one chance to put in a go-ahead goal. With a tied game, it looked as if overtime was all but a given as 90 seconds remained on the clock.
But with 1 minute, 16 seconds left, the Lancers got the opportunity they were hoping for as Brady Dowell lined up to take a penalty kick. Dowell did a quick stutter step before firing a shot to the right post just past the reach of standout goalie Elliott Wannop.
The goal put the Lancers ahead and secured an exciting 2-1 win at the Balls Mills Soccer Club on Saturday morning over the Millionaires and kept Loyalsock undefeated early in the season.
“That was for sure a big sigh of relief because it was a stressful, hard fought game and they’re a really good team,” Dowell said.
“Definitely a relief but on the whole I was very happy with our performance today,” Loyalsock coach Adam Scheibeler said.
The Lancers (4-0) dominated majority of the game by holding a 15-5 shots on goal advantage and didn’t allow Williamsport (1-1) to get many great looks. Of the Millionaires’ five shots on goal just two came from inside the 18 and both were late in the second half.
Williamsport had six second-half shots in total, and all but one came from Jimmy Pombor. Perhaps its no surprise then it was Pombor who scored the equalizing goal for Williamsport with 8:12 remaining in the game when he buried a shot from 15 yards out perfectly to the right far post.
“At that point, we kind of made some tactical adjustments, sitting back defensively a little bit and when it goes in I know I have to make a couple changes and we’re going for it again,” Scheibeler said. “So I thought the boys did respond very well to conceding one. I thought our midfield was great. Our three up top are just fantastic. (Matt) Barone and (Andres) Quintana really helped us win that midfield battle and control the game.”
“I thought second half we were playing better than the first half. They were kind of taking it to us at end of the first half. I thought we played better in the second half, I thought we had a lot of momentum,” Williamsport coach Lee Kaar said. “Jimmy’s the type of kid who can absolutely take over a game. They played very well on him, stood him up and played good defense on him all game. But Jimmy’s the type of kid that has the talent in the 84th minute to still be going 100%. It’s very helpful.”
Dowell scored the game’s first goal with 21:53 to play in the second half when he was sent a great ball from midfield, split two defenders and was able to get around Wannop, who came out of goal. That gave Dowell an open field in front of him as he fired a shot dead center to the net for the 1-0 lead.
“We obviously wanted to win, but they’re a really good team so we were just going to come out with all we got and I think we played really well,” Dowell said.
The Millionaires were held to just one shot in the first half and didn’t get many opportunities as the Lancers played outstanding for all 80 minutes and didn’t make things easy for Williamsport.
“Our two center backs Sam Rosario and Jay Oaks, they’ve been very solid for us, especially Sam. He’s a special athlete and Jay’s the type of guy that calms us down back there,” Scheibeler said.
Pombor had a great chance to score with 14 minutes to play in the game when he got just inside of the 18 and had a great shot to the far right post that just narrowly missed wide by roughly a foot.
“I’m OK with how we played and our effort, I think we just need to get more shots on goal, especially when we had many times we were up in our final third and we come away with nothing in there and they counter,” Kaar said.
Kaleb McKeon had Williamsport’s lone first-half shot and sent a nice high shot from about 30 yards out, but Loyalsock goalie Caleb Albaugh caught it to prevent any goal.
