Local roundup: Hughesville’s Maria Duff earns a three-set win in girls tennis

Maria Duff won a scintillating three-set match at No. 3 singles, helping Hughesville earn a thrilling 3-2 victory over Danville in a girls tennis match that lasted nearly three hours. Duff won the first and third sets in tie-breakers, taking the third set 7-1.

Loyalsock’s doubles team of Madelyn Hall and Chloe Kennedy won an exciting three-set match (6-2, 1-6, 7-5) to help the Lancers win, 3-2, against Montoursville. Lydia Barbour won a big match, handing Sock’s Kaitlyn Savidge her first loss at No. 1 singles.

Williamsport also won an exciting match, 3-2, as Mary Hillman outlasted Melanie Minnier at No. 1 singles in the deciding match. Hillman rallied from a set down and won the third set in a tiebreaker (7-4) to give Williamsport the win.

Rory Oden, Rebekah Rosario and Breanna King won singles matches to help Muncy defeat St. John Neumann, 4-1. Chloe Skaluba and Lydia Bitler won in doubles for the Indians.

Jersey Shore won all five of its singles and doubles matches in straight sets as it blanked Mifflinburg, 5-0. Sam Machmer, Riley Frazier and Breanna Porter won singles matches.

Defending District 4 Class AA champion Olivia Dorner opened her title defense in impressive fashion, winning 6-0, 6-0 in singles action as South Williamsport defeated Bucktail, 4-1. Alayna McGovern and Eve Jackson also won straight-set singles matches for South.

Carolina Carpenetti needed three sets, but she posted a victory at No. 1 singles to help Central Mountain top Selinsgrove, 5-0.

• Ella Reish scored a pair of second-half goals to break a tie and lead Lewisburg to a 4-2 win over Mifflinburg in girls soccer. Reish scored an unassisted goal in the 60th minute and another in the 73rd minute.

Leah Walter had two goals and an assist as Milton defeated Warrior Run, 4-1. Warrior Run’s goal came from Lindsey Trapani off a Riley Bohart assist.

North Penn-Mansfield tied Williamson in double overtime, 1-1. Aleiah Jackson scored four minutes into the second half to tie the game.

Sullivan County beat Sayre, 5-2, as Bethany Beinlich scored four goals and Sophie Springman added one. Kassidy Beinlich had eight saves.

Lily Saul had two goals and an assist and Jillian Iron scored twice as Montoursville blanked Shamokin, 4-0, to improve to 4-0. The Warriors limited the Indians to just two shots on goal.

Loyalsock fell to Danville in double overtime, 1-0. Rylie French recorded seven saves for the Lancers, which out-shot Danville (9-8). The Ironmen scored the game-winner with just 57.6 seconds remaining in the second overtime period.

• Midd-West beat Loyalsock, 2-1, in an overtime thriller in boys soccer. The loss was the Lancers’ first of the season as they are now 4-1. Brady Dowell scored the Lancers’ goal and Matt Barone had the assist.

• Nick Mahoney shot a match-best 35 as Lewisburg defeated Williamsport, 165-209 in golf. Will Gronlund was second with a 35 and Shawn Kelly shot a 41. Douglas Nicholas shot a 50 for Williamsport.

• Lily Moyer scored a goal and added a pair of assists as Muncy posted a 4-1 win over Benton in high school field hockey. Hallie McClure got the Indians on the board with their first goal.

• Williamsport beat Shamokin, 3-0 (25-10, 25-14, 25-19) in girls volleyball as Caitlin Bacon had a team-high 20 points. Johanna Baker had 14 assists for the Millionaires and Emma Dickey had 13 digs. Kyla Kelley had 10 digs.

Galeton lost to Johnsonburg, 3-0 (25-14, 25-23, 27-25). Olivia Rohrbaugh had eight digs and Alli Macensky led the team with five kills. Makenna Shuemaer added eight digs and six assists.
