Local roundup: Montoursville, Lewisburg girls advance in District 4 Class AA playoffs

Montoursville scored a goal in each half to defeat Troy, 2-0, in the District 4 Class AA quarterfinals Friday night.

Lydia Earnest put the Warriors ahead midway through the first half for a 1-0 lead at the half. Maddison Moll fed Shyanne Klemic a ball in the second half to go ahead, 2-0.

“We had many missed opportunities to score and struggled to capitalize, so putting that goal in took the pressure off us,” Montoursville coach Vic Gorini said.

The Warriors played excellent defensively, limiting Troy to just three shots on goal.

“We have been solid defensively all year and have not given up a goal in our seven away games,” Gorini said. “We face a very offensive team in the semifinals, so it will be a great challenge to keep that streak alive. We look forward for the opportunity.”

Montoursville will Central Columbia in the semifinals. The Blue Jays pummeled Towanda, 13-0. The Warriors lost earlier in the season to the Blue Jays, 4-1.

Lewisburg blanked Wellsboro, 5-0, in the District 4 Class AA quarterfinals.

Wellsboro held the Green Dragons scoreless through the first 40 minutes.

“It was just a matter of keeping pressure on them and keep going,” Lewisburg coach Terry Gerlinski said.

Chelsea Stanton came up big for the Green Dragons, recording a hat trick in the second half. Ella Reish scored off an Amelia Kiepke shot to make it 4-0 with 4 minutes left to play before Mikayla Long drilled a shot from 33 yards out to make it a 5-0 game.

The Green Hornets were limited to just five shots on goal and defensively, Lewisburg prevented Kerrah Clymer from doing damage. Clymer leads the area in goals scored with 35.

“Defensively we always talk about staying organized, communication, talking to each other and making sure we have each other covered,” Gerlinski said. “We didn’t do anything different defensively tonight. Big thing was working on communication, playing quick and working hard. You’re in the playoffs now, you have to work your tail off.”

Reish missed a penalty kick high after Stanton made it a 1-0 game.

The Green Dragons advance to face state-ranked Bloomsburg in semifinals. The Panthers blanked Midd-West, 2-0, Friday afternoon in the quarterfinals.

Lewisburg finished as district runners-up each of the last two seasons and were district runners-up four times in the past six seasons.
