Milton at Jersey Shore

Milton PPG–4.5, PPA–35.5; YPG–136.8, YPA–332.5

Milton facts: The Black Panthers are one of the area’s youngest teams and have lost 14 straight games. While that streak is likely to continue tonight, Milton is looking to build a foundation for future success. The Panthers played Shikellamy tough two weeks ago in a 14-0 loss, allowing their fewest points in two years. Quarterback Wade Young threw for 131 yards in his first start against Central Mountain last week and both Ashton Canelo and Jason Valladares have been 100-yard rushers during their scholastic careers. Canelo also can do damage as a receiver and caught four passes a week ago. The junior two-year starter caught 11 passes over the final two weeks a year ago and also played some quarterback last season.

Milton player to watch–Xzavier Minium: The sophomore wide receiver gives Milton a nice building block moving forward and caught a 61-yard touchdown against Central Mountain. He was the team’s leading receiver as a freshman and averages 24.3 yards per catch.

Jersey Shore PPG–45.5, PPA–3.5; YPG–434.3, YPA–74.5

Jersey Shore facts: The two-time defending District 4 Class AAAA champions are ranked No. 2 in the 4A state rankings and have looked that part, outscoring their opponents, 182-14. The defense has formed a Black and Orange wall. That unit has held three straight teams to fewer than 100 yards and has not surrendered more than 117 yards in a game. Opponents also have managed just 97 rushing yards against Jersey Shore. Defensive end Dalton Dugan has made six tackles for loss and has an area-high four sacks. Fellow defensive end Quincey Myers has 2 1/2 sacks, recovering two fumbles while returning one for a touchdown, and also forcing a fumble. Gabe and Hayden Packer lead the team in tackles and have combined for six tackles for loss. Wide receiver Cayden Hess became the program’s all-time leading receiver last week (104) and leads the area in catches, yards and touchdowns. Dugan, Owen Anderson and Kooper Peacock also are receiving threats and running back Cam Allison has topped 100 yards rushing in all four games. Quarterback Branden Wheary has thrown for a district-high 14 touchdowns in his first year starting and Brady Jordan and Hayden Packer also have run well. The offensive line has been outstanding, helping Jersey Shore lead the area in yards per game.

Jersey Shore player to watch–Lee Springman: A valuable two-way starting linemen who has been critical to Jersey Shore’s success the last three years, Springman is an anchor on both sides of the ball. A quality run stuffer, Springman also has surged off the ball offensively, helping pave the way for a high-octane offense.

Outlook: Jersey Shore is closing in on a third straight district final appearance and should continue steamrolling toward that game tonight.
