Lewisburg boys rout Midd-West to win repeat District 4 Class AA championship

BRETT R. CROSSLEY/Special to the Sun-Gazette Lewisburg's Ben Liscum directs a shot on goal during the District 4 Class AA championship against Midd-West on Saturday. Liscum scored three goals as Lewisburg won, 7-0.

Earlier in the season, Lewisburg pummeled rival Midd-West and won by nine goals. In the rematch for the district championship, it wasn’t much different.

Lewisburg again beat the Mustangs in a rout, winning 7-0 to capture the Green Dragons’ second consecutive District 4 Class AA championship and ninth since 2010.

The Green Dragons got the unique honor of winning a district title at home in front of its own fans since the top seed hosted district games this postseason.

“It meant a lot. I think we’ve been in that situation, especially my class, we’ve played them in three District 4 finals,” Lewisburg’s Ben Liscum said. “This year we got it at home in front of home supporters. It was a different atmosphere and was great to get the win today and solidify ourselves as the top dog in the district.”

If anyone doubted Lewisburg was a top dog in the district field, Saturday was the exclamation point to prove it.

Liscum and Anthony Bhangdia were forces for Lewisburg all game. The duo both recorded hat tricks and Philip Permyashkin, Jack Dieffenderfer added assists. Liscum had two assists. Stephen Tiffin scored the game’s final goal.

Midd-West is a talented team and managed just two shots on goal. In the first half, Midd-West’s only shot was off a free kick.

“Our defensive third today, our team was just solid. Eli (Adams) and Simon (Strumbris) were rocks back there and our outside backs played well,” Liscum said. “Tony came up big when he needed to (in goal).”

Lewisburg was able to draw Midd-West out and kept possession, something Liscum noted was key for beating the Mustangs.

“When they get ball, I’ve said it before, it’s really hard for teams to go forward against us. It’s hard to get opportunities and Alan Daniel in defensive midfield took Nick Eppley (out of it),” Liscum said. “He’s a great player and Alan shut him down really well today and forced him to where he didn’t want too go.”

Eppley led Midd-West with 26 goals this year.
