Selinsgrove blanks Jersey Shore 5-0 to win District 4 Class AAA boy soccer title
SELINSGROVE – Selinsgrove captured the District 4 Class AAA boys soccer championship Saturday night thanks to Kyle Ruhl’s hat trick in the 5-0 victory.
Despite the shutout loss to end the season for Jersey Shore, Bulldogs coach Mitch Cornelius was impressed with how his team overcame the odds this season.
“Every single game, nobody thought this team was going to win. These kids, the whole year long, tried their hardest all the time. We beat some big teams this year, teams nobody thought we could hang with,” Cornelius said.
The Seals high-powered offense got to work quick in Saturday night’s championship match. Senior striker Kyle Ruhl scored just 50 seconds into action. Ruhl blasted a shot from the right side into Jersey Shore’s net to put the Seals ahead, 1-0. Shortly after, Ruhl found the back of the net again for Selinsgrove, the senior scored from the same spot to stretch the Seals’ lead to two at the 13:18 mark.
Jersey Shore’s defense stepped-up its performance after allowing two goals to Selinsgrove. The Bulldogs trailed 2-0 at halftime.
The final began slow, as both teams struggled to get any solid looks at a shot. Selinsgrove slowed down its offensive tempo, by controlling possession and letting the clock tick away for the first 10 minutes of the second half. Freshman midfielder Colin Findlay stretched the Seals’ lead to four, after he snuck behind Jersey Shore’s defense for the goal.
Selinsgrove would then go onto to add two more goals to secure the District title. Ryan Mangels tapped in a two-footer at the 63:21 mark of the match, and Rhul completed his hat trick late in the match at 73:27 to close out the scoring for Selinsgrove.
The Seals will meet Crestwood on Tuesday in the first round of the PIAA playoffs.
