Williamsport girls lose to state-ranked Parkland in Class AAAA quarterfinals, 3-0
Williamsport was hoping to hold Parkland to a one-goal lead at halftime to try and take advantage of the wind and get pressure to open the second half. Parkland didn’t let that happen, though, as the Trojans scored just before halftime to swing any momentum away.
Parkland scored midway through the second half and defeated Williamsport, 3-0, in the PIAA Class AAAA quarterfinals at Parkland on Saturday afternoon.
“All three goals by them were very legitimate goals. Nothing cheap about them. I don’t think any keeper would have gotten them,” Williamsport coach Scott McNeill said. “In 12 games they had put away 73 goals and only allowed three. They were strong. They’re ranked No. 2 in the state.”
Adelia Engle helped keep Williamsport in the game with nine saves against a talented and state-ranked Trojans team. Williamsport was out-shot, 12-4, and couldn’t seem to put away the goal when they needed.
“They scored with about 3 minutes to go in first half to make it 2-0 and then we came out and tried to put one in to make it a ball game, but they scored again in 65th minute mark to put it away, 3-0,” McNeill said.
The Millionaires almost put a goal in when Sarina Beiter had a free kick from 30 yards out. The ball squirted through but Parkland prevented it from going in.
Williamsport has just two seniors on its roster in Hannah Myers and Violet Lindsay and McNeill noted how he’s glad they were able to leave the program with four district championships and “have nothing but the right to keep their heads up high.”
“I’m terrifically proud. They’re just awesome. We’ve been through the injuries and so forth and everyone stayed together and believed in themselves,” McNeill said. “We get nine starters back next year and we got a crew of seventh and eighth graders coming up that have been playing travel team as well, so the program should continue to be solid.”
Alex Marsteller scored the Trojans’ first and last goal and Mary Gonzalez made it a 2-0 game. Theresa Gonzalez was in goal for Parkland and had the shutout.
